Birkbeck, University of London is seeking an Associate Lecturer to support a postgraduate module in Computational Statistics this Autumn 2026.
As Associate Lecturer you will join the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences and support the module:
Computational Statistics, Level 7
3 hours per week
Thursdays 6‑9pm, October to December 2026.
Responsibilities
- Teach and support students in modern computational methods in statistics, including Monte Carlo methods, resampling techniques, computationally intensive statistical inference and statistical programming.
- Guide students through rigorous computational and analytical problem-solving.
Qualifications
- Strong academic foundation in computational statistics and statistical inference.
- Excellent ability to clearly explain complex theoretical and computational concepts and support statistical problem‑solving.
- Experience supporting students in using advanced mathematical or statistical software.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Experience or knowledge of simulation methods, pseudo‑random numbers, generation of random variables, variance reduction methods, randomisation tests, the bootstrap and jackknife, the EM algorithm, non‑parametric regression, smoothing and kernel density estimation is highly desirable.
Remuneration
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College, starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro‑rata London Allowance and holiday pay for contact hours worked. The rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, covering preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
Contract
Fixed‑term, part‑time contract teaching.
