Birkbeck, University of London is seeking a Careers Module Lead to lead the delivery, evaluation, and development of the Micro-Placement Module as part of the Careers and Enterprise team.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

You will lead the delivery, evaluation, and development of the Micro-Placement Module, ensuring high-quality teaching, administration, and stakeholder engagement to provide students with meaningful academic and workplace experiences. In addition, you will support wider Careers and Enterprise initiatives and contribute to enhancing employability outcomes across Birkbeck.

MAIN DUTIES

  • Micro-Placement Module Delivery
    • Coordinate and manage the administration and delivery of the module, working with the wider Careers and Enterprise team to research and deliver module content to the student body.
    • Collaborate with academics to ensure the module aligns with academic goals.
    • Facilitate employer-led sessions and continue to explore ways to enhance the module, working with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Student Engagement
    • Support students to gain their own micro-placements, while actively securing live brief/project opportunities with hosts if required.
    • Develop and enhance resources on our portals, including Handshake and Career Access Portal, identifying and understanding usage to help define future activities and explore ways to develop new products.
    • Provide daily engagement with students, conducting 1:1 consultations, CV reviews, and mock interviews.
    • Offer general career advice, referral to other services where appropriate and answer queries.
    • Monitor and continue to develop module progress through feedback and learning.
  • Workshop Delivery
    • Design, deliver and facilitate relevant sessions to students, supporting them to gain up-to-date skills to secure a micro-placement in line with the module requirements.
    • Devise and deliver employer engagement events to initiate/develop employer relationships to generate opportunities, collaboration, and knowledge exchange.
  • Stakeholder Relationships
    • Develop a robust cohort of new employer relationships, while maintaining strategic relationships with existing employers.
    • Develop strong working relationships with key academics and work collaboratively and creatively with internal stakeholders.
    • Collaborate with the wider Careers and Enterprise team to secure micro-placements for students.
    • Collaborate with internal departments to integrate the careers and enterprise agenda into Birkbeck’s mission and recognise our work in the careers education space.
    • Liaise with academics and internal Professional Service departments as required to promote the service.
  • Additional Support
    • Complete administrative tasks and record keeping using appropriate software to facilitate intra-team communications and reporting.
    • Ensure appropriate student feedback, monitoring, and quality processes are in place.
    • Stay up to date with market intelligence and opportunities as well as legislative changes.
    • Devise innovative and engaging content including articles, event reviews, blogs and social media campaigns to entice students to our services.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS AND CONTACTS

  • Contact with the Careers Services Manager.
  • Contact with the Careers and Enterprise team, including the Module Lead for Your Career Development.
  • Contact with students, and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contact with the Module Convenor.
  • Contact with relevant teams, Schools and departments across Birkbeck.
  • Representation on Birkbeck committees and groups.
  • Contact with relevant teams in other Higher Education institutions.

DIMENSIONS

  • Birkbeck Careers and Enterprise serves 12,500 Birkbeck students and extensive numbers of external clients and alumni.
  • Lead on the end-to-end delivery of the Micro-Placement Module for around 50 students, including planning, teaching, marking, evaluation and development.
  • Provide 1:1 student support.
  • Engage in a range of employer engagement activities.
  • Regularly lead on or support other careers and enterprise work.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

FURTHER INFORMATION

  • Salary: £38,981 rising to £44,247 per annum, pro rata (50% of £19,490.50 rising to £22,123.50 per annum FTE).
  • Hours and Working Pattern: 17.5 hours per week (0.5 FTE). This is a part-time role and is hybrid, with at least one day on campus per week – which will vary depending on student demand. Working on Tuesdays is essential as it is the Careers and Enterprise team day. The working pattern for the remaining days can be discussed.
  • Duration of Post: Fixed term for 17 months until 31 July 2027.
