Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking a Lecturer in Medieval Studies to join our dynamic team within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Autumn 2026.

Salary: £44,247 rising to £60,858 per annum.

Contract & Working Hours: Open-ended, Full time, 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Teaching hours will vary from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm, with daytime modules being introduced.

Grade & Business Unit: Grade LLEC, School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach Medieval English literature and Medieval history across the Faculty, including BA English, BA History, and postgraduate taught programmes.
  • Administer programmes/modules, supervise doctoral students, assess and support learners, and provide pastoral care.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, interdisciplinary research and teaching, and collaborate on teaching programmes or research in identity, race/ethnicity, or gender.
  • Supervise doctoral students and contribute to the intellectual and cultural life of the institution and its partners.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in any area of Medieval Studies.
  • Research expertise in the literature, history and culture of the Late Medieval period (c.1300‑1500).
  • Capacity to contribute to interdisciplinary research, teaching, and supervise doctoral students.

Remuneration: Salary is £44,247 rising to £60,858 per annum; Grade LLEC on the College's London Pay Scale, including a consolidated weighting/allowance applicable to staff in the London area.
