Birkbeck, University of London is looking for an exceptional lecturer in biological sciences to join the School of Natural Sciences. This fixed-term, 35-hour per week appointment is a 5-year contract (flexible hours) with visa sponsorship available.
Key areas of interest: plant or insect biodiversity; organismal biology and ecology; plant/animal/microbe interactions, including mycology; and population/conservation genetics, potentially applied to diverse organisms.
Responsibilities:
- Teach undergraduate, MSc, and PhD courses and contribute to the BSc Biological Sciences programme.
- Lead an internationally recognised research programme, securing external funding and delivering high-quality research.
- Supervise undergraduate, MSc, and PhD research students.
- Organise teaching and research activities within the School and support knowledge transfer and public engagement.
- Engage collegially with colleagues, demonstrating strong interpersonal, organisational, and administrative skills.
- Support the School’s collaborative culture and contribute to its teaching, research, and administration.
Qualifications:
- PhD in biological sciences or a closely related subject.
- Proven record of publishing high-quality research.
- Experience teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
- Understanding of Birkbeck’s widening participation principles and experience working with mature-age, part-time, and non-traditional learners from diverse backgrounds.
- Commitment to excellence in research and teaching, and interest in impact generation and public engagement.
- Strong interpersonal, organisational, and administrative skills to manage teaching teams effectively.
Contract: Fixed term, 5-year, 35 hours per week (flexible). Visa sponsorship available.
Salary: £44,247 rising to £60,858 per annum, based on the College’s London pay scale. Benefits include a competitive salary and pension scheme, 31 days paid leave, flexible working arrangements, and generous benefits in the higher-education sector.
