Birkbeck, University of London is seeking an Associate Lecturer to join the teaching team and support the School of Natural Sciences in Autumn 2026.
Responsibilities:
- Teach and support the module Volcanism in the Solar System (Level 6), 30 hours, Tuesday evenings 6‑9 pm.
- Deliver lectures, seminars and practical classes covering heat and melting, volcanic processes, erosion, planetary conditions, and records of volcanism on Earth, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Io and icy bodies.
- Design and conduct practical activities such as analogue experiments, petrological study and satellite data analysis.
- Jointly responsible for the security of any relevant extra‑terrestrial samples.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Knowledge of volcanic processes and products applicable to Earth and/or other planetary bodies.
- Experience teaching relevant topics, including practical sessions.
- Qualification at the level required to teach, or equivalent professional/industry experience.
- Specialist knowledge of volcanism in the Solar System.
Remuneration: £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro‑rata London Allowance and holiday pay, for contact hours worked. Hourly rate includes a Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier of 2.5 covering preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties.
Contract: Fixed‑term, part‑time contract teaching from October to December 2026.
