We have an excellent opportunity for an Associate Lecturer to teach this Autumn term 2026. Birkbeck, University of London, is looking to recruit an Associate Lecturer on a part-time, fixed term basis.
Remuneration: £69.68 per hour. The hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and includes a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ to cover preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
Contract: Fixed term, October to December 2026, part-time contract.
Closing date: Sunday 7 June 2026.

Mode and Grade: Part time; Grade 7.
Business Unit: School of Historical Studies.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver teaching to Birkbeck students, enabling them to complete their studies successfully.
- Undertake related course administrative duties, including supervising selection of essay topics and marking presentations and essays.
- Teach the undergraduate archaeology module: The Archaeology of the Roman Empire (undergraduate module).
- Teaching 30 hours in total for the term, with sessions on Tuesday 6-9pm, October to December 2026.
Qualifications:
- Good knowledge of the archaeology of the Roman Empire (including provincial contexts, material culture, architecture, settlements, and landscapes).
- Understanding of historiographical and theoretical debates in the study of Roman archaeology.
- PhD completed or near completion.
- Some experience teaching a diverse group of undergraduate students.
- A PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate specialism or near completion is desirable.
- Teaching experience at undergraduate level and a developing track record of research in the field.
- Good understanding of different teaching and learning methods and experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Effective oral and written communication skills and good administrative skills.
