Birkbeck, University of London is seeking an Associate Lecturer to support the School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication in the 2026-2027 academic year.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Chinese Mandarin language modules, including Chinese 1 and possibly Chinese 2 and 3 depending on student numbers.
  • All language modules run once a week at one of the following times: Thursday 6-8.30pm, Friday 6-8.30pm, Saturday 10-12.30pm, Saturday 2-4.30pm.
  • Each class is 2.5 hours and the module runs for 3 terms (24 weeks total).
  • The role includes preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties related to the course.

Qualifications

  • Native knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and simplified characters.
  • Experience teaching Mandarin Chinese to beginners, post‑beginners and intermediate levels and qualification to the corresponding level of the award, or equivalent professional/industry experience.
  • Knowledge of traditional/orthodox characters and Sinophone cultures beyond mainland China is desirable.
  • Background from broader Sinophone communities is especially welcomed.

Remuneration

  • The hourly rate is £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro‑rata London Allowance and holiday pay, for contact hours worked.
  • The rate is based on a starting point of Grade 7 and includes a duties related to teaching multiplier of 2.5.

Contract

  • Fixed‑term, part‑time contract teaching from August to September 2027.
