We are looking for an experienced and proactive Lead Health & Safety Advisor to take ownership of our Health & Safety and Compliance function across our bakery and retail operations. This is a hands‑on leadership role where you will shape, implement and continuously improve our health and safety strategy, ensuring a safe, compliant and positive working environment for all employees.

Location: Bakery, Derby, Ascot Drive, Alvaston, Derby, DE24 8GN

Employment Type: Full‑time

Hours: 40 p/w

Salary: £38,000 p/y

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development, implementation and review of health and safety policies and procedures in line with legislation and best practice.
  • Conduct risk assessments, site inspections and safety audits, ensuring corrective and preventative actions are implemented effectively.
  • Lead investigations into accidents, incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and preventative measures.
  • Deliver engaging health and safety training, toolbox talks and guidance to employees at all levels.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation, regulations and insurance requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date health and safety documentation and records.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for external bodies including health and safety authorities, insurers and contractors.
  • Develop, test and maintain emergency response plans and conduct drills.
  • Promote a positive health and safety culture through engagement initiatives and behavioural safety activities.
  • Manage the health and safety budget to ensure effective use of resources.
  • Line manage and coordinate the Health & Safety Advisor, ensuring consistent support across the business.

Additional Duties:

  • Coordinate onsite monitoring, sampling and occupational health surveillance programmes.
  • Chair and lead Bakery Health & Safety Committee meetings, ensuring actions are tracked and followed up.
  • Provide health and safety support to internal projects and initiatives.
  • Conduct individual employee health and safety assessments when required.

About You:

You are a confident, organised and highly motivated health and safety professional who can engage effectively at all levels of the business. You are calm under pressure, ethical in your approach, and committed to continuous improvement.

Essential Requirements:

  • NEBOSH Certificate (or equivalent) in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Proven experience in a health and safety role with demonstrable success in implementing safety initiatives.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and problem‑solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Desirable:

  • NEBOSH Diploma or degree‑level qualification in Occupational Health & Safety or a related discipline.
  • Experience within food manufacturing, bakery, warehouse or retail environments.
  • Minimum Food Safety Level 2 qualification.
