Birchwell Associates are recruiting on behalf of an established UK EPC contractor operating across the renewable energy sector. We are seeking an accomplished Solar PV Technical Manager to take ownership of the technical delivery of solar PV projects from early-stage design through to commissioning and handover. This is a senior technical leadership position, suited to a hands-on professional who can ensure high standards of engineering quality, safety compliance, and system performance across a diverse project portfolio.
The Role: As Solar PV Technical Manager, you will lead the technical function across commercial and utility-scale solar projects, providing expert oversight, governance, and mentoring to engineering and site teams. Key responsibilities include:
- Managing the full technical design and engineering process for solar PV installations
- Carrying out site audits, quality inspections, snagging, and producing detailed QC reports
- Reviewing EPC contracts and technical specifications and translating requirements into electrical designs, schematics, and subcontractor scopes
- Preparing technical content for tenders, including system designs, bills of quantities, rate cards, and technical schedules
- Undertaking cable calculations, AC network analysis, and system performance assessments
- Conducting site feasibility studies and pre-construction technical assessments
- Working closely with project managers, clients, suppliers, and installation partners to ensure smooth delivery
- Producing and maintaining technical documentation packs including drawings, test results, compliance records, and risk assessments
- Acting as the Technical Nominee under an Electrical Competent Person Scheme
- Leading, mentoring, and developing engineers and technicians while ensuring regulatory compliance
- Keeping abreast of changes in legislation, standards, and emerging technologies within the solar PV sector
Candidate Requirements: Degree or higher qualification in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a related discipline. Strong background in solar PV system design, installation, and commissioning. In-depth understanding of electrical infrastructure, grid connections, and UK regulations. City & Guilds 2391 Inspection & Testing qualification. CSCS Electrical Supervisor or Manager card. Proficiency with PV design and drafting tools (such as PVsyst and AutoCAD). Strong organisational, leadership, and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work to deadlines.
Desirable Experience: Exposure to utility-scale battery storage projects. HV systems or substation design and construction experience. City & Guilds 2396 Design qualification. SMSTS or equivalent site management certification.
Package & Benefits: Salary of £50,000 - £55,000, dependent on experience. Project-related bonus scheme. Company vehicle. 25 days annual leave plus.
