Casual Housekeeper / Front of House
Reports to: Assistant Manager
About Birchgrove
Birchgrove is a different kind of later living. Our neighbourhoods are places to feel genuinely at home - with your own front door, your own routines and the freedom to live life your way, alongside a welcoming community when you want it. We believe later life should feel lighter, easier and full of possibility, with beautiful homes, friendship, independence and the reassurance of support close by.
Why neighbours? Because this is their home. The people who live at Birchgrove are not defined by a building or a service; they are the people next door, the familiar face over lunch, the person you stop and chat to in the hallway. We get to know people as individuals - their stories, preferences and even their quirks - and we want everyone to feel part of something without ever losing their independence or sense of self. Calling people neighbours simply feels more like Birchgrove: warm, personal and rooted in belonging.
The role
As a Casual Housekeeper / Front of House colleague, you will provide flexible support across the neighbourhood, helping us maintain beautiful, shared spaces and neighbours' apartments while also supporting reception, hospitality and food-and-beverage service when required.
Because the role moves between different parts of the neighbourhood, you will need to be adaptable, friendly and comfortable turning your hand to a range of practical tasks while keeping service standards high.
This is an active, hands-on role and, when supporting housekeeping, much of the shift may be spent on your feet, moving between apartments and communal areas and carrying out repeated cleaning tasks.
The person
- Warm, approachable and naturally helpful.
- Flexible and comfortable moving between housekeeping and front-of-house duties.
- Reliable, organised and able to work confidently as part of a team.
- A natural feel for good service and clear, friendly communication.
- Respectful of neighbours' homes, privacy and independence.
- Comfortable with the physical nature of housekeeping duties, including being on your feet for much of the shift and carrying out repeated cleaning tasks.
- Previous hospitality, housekeeping, cleaning or customer-service experience is desirable.
- Able to follow food-hygiene, cleaning and health-and-safety procedures.
- Available to work casual shifts, including evenings or weekends where required.
What you will be doing
- Carry out agreed housekeeping duties in neighbours' apartments and communal areas.
- Support reception by greeting neighbours, visitors and contractors warmly and helping with routine enquiries.
- Answer telephone enquiries professionally and take or pass on messages accurately.
- Support food and beverage service, including setting up, serving meals and drinks, clearing and resetting areas.
- Assist with neighbourhood activities, events and functions.
- Replenish supplies and help keep reception, communal and hospitality areas clean and well presented.
- Report maintenance defects, hazards, shortages or concerns promptly.
- Follow visitor, access, key, confidentiality and security procedures relevant to the shift.
- Work flexibly with colleagues to make sure essential services are covered and neighbours receive a warm, consistent experience.
What we expect from everyone
- Be warm, helpful and respectful. Get to know people as individuals and remember that, for our neighbours, this is home.
- Take ownership. If you can help, do. If you cannot, make sure the right person knows and follow it through rather than letting something drift.
- Speak up if something does not feel right - whether it is a safety concern, inappropriate behaviour, a mistake or a concern about someone's wellbeing.
- Respect people's privacy and handle personal or confidential information carefully, sharing it only when there is a genuine need to do so.
- Work safely, complete the training required for your role and ask for help when you are unsure or something is outside your training, competence or authority.
Health, safety and wellbeing
- Follow the health-and-safety procedures relevant to whichever duties you are carrying out on the shift.
- Use cleaning products, PPE and equipment safely and in line with COSHH and training.
- Follow food-hygiene and allergen procedures when supporting food or drink service.
- Never guess or provide allergen information from memory. Use Birchgrove's approved allergen information and refer queries to an appropriately trained colleague whenever required.
- Use safe manual-handling techniques and wet-floor controls.
- Report accidents, hazards, near misses, defects and security concerns immediately.
- Follow fire, emergency and evacuation procedures and any role-specific instructions given for the shift.
What you can expect from us
- Work that matters. Every shift helps make the neighbourhood feel welcoming, comfortable and well cared for.
- A supportive team where kindness, teamwork and doing a good job for our neighbours really matter.
- The training you need for the duties you carry out, with opportunities to build your skills and experience.
- A warm, inclusive workplace where different backgrounds and perspectives are welcome and respected. Birchgrove is a Living Wage Employer and a Disability Confident Employer.
- Benefits and perks depend on contract type and eligibility. Casual colleagues can enjoy free breakfast and lunch when working a shift in our neighbourhoods, with access to other schemes where eligible.
This job description sets out the main responsibilities of the role and is not exhaustive. You may be asked to carry out other reasonable duties that fit the nature and level of the role and the needs of the neighbourhood.
