We have a (Senior) Computational Biologist within a mission-driven, research and technology organisation focused on translating advanced genomic science into real-world diagnostic and public health applications. As a Scientist or Senior Scientist in Computational Genomics, you will design and develop novel algorithms and analytical methods for microbial sequencing data, contributing directly to the development of next-generation diagnostic solutions. Please note, this role is based in Oxford, UK and the company will sponsor & relocate.

Your Responsibilities

  • Design and evaluate new computational approaches for genome assembly, binning, and functional characterisation from metagenomic sequencing data
  • Apply advanced statistical and AI/ML techniques to large-scale microbial datasets
  • Implement methods into scalable, reproducible, and modular workflows in collaboration with engineering teams
  • Benchmark approaches using public and internal datasets and support experimental validation
  • Contribute to technical discussions across computational, software, and wet-lab teams
  • Communicate complex concepts clearly to interdisciplinary stakeholders

You Will Bring

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field
  • Experience developing computational methods for next-generation sequencing data (postdoctoral or industry experience for Senior level)
  • Strong grounding in algorithms, data structures, and statistical modelling relevant to genomics
  • Experience applying machine learning to biological or sequencing data
  • Proficiency in programming (e.g. Python, C/C++, Rust) and modern software development practices
  • A rigorous, detail-oriented mindset with commitment to reproducibility and benchmarking

Desirable: Experience with microbial genomics, long-read sequencing, workflow management systems, cloud environments, or open-source bioinformatics contributions.
