We are seeking an experienced and proactive Compliance Manager to lead and manage the company’s Quality, Environmental, Health & Safety (QEHS) function. The successful candidate will have proven experience within either food manufacturing, food packaging, packaging manufacturing or a closely related regulated manufacturing environment, with a strong understanding of customer, legislative and regulatory requirements. A key focus of the role will be maintaining and continuously improving the company’s BRCGS certification and ISO management system ISO 14001 as well as FSC/PEFC certifications. The Compliance Manager will work closely with all departments to ensure that robust systems, processes and controls are in place, whilst driving continuous improvement and supporting the business in achieving its operational and commercial objectives.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Environmental Compliance
- Take responsibility for the company’s environmental management system in line with ISO 14001.
- Ensure compliance with applicable environmental legislation and regulatory requirements including EPR.
- Monitor environmental performance, including waste, energy, water, emissions and resource usage where applicable.
- Develop and support initiatives to reduce waste, energy consumption and environmental impact.
- Work with operational teams to improve recycling, waste segregation and resource efficiency.
- Support the business in establishing and achieving environmental objectives and targets.
- Maintain appropriate environmental records, assessments and documentation.
- Monitor changes in environmental legislation and ensure the business responds appropriately.
- Health & Safety
- Lead the company’s Health & Safety management system and promote a strong safety culture.
- Ensure compliance with relevant UK health and safety legislation.
- Maintain and continually improve systems aligned with ISO 45001 and be willing to work towards certification if required.
- Conduct and review risk assessments, COSHH assessments, workplace inspections and safety audits.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
- Develop and deliver appropriate health and safety training and awareness programmes.
- Work closely with managers and employees to identify hazards and implement appropriate control measures.
- Monitor health and safety performance and provide regular reports to senior management.
- Ensure appropriate emergency procedures and business continuity arrangements are maintained.
- Liaise with external bodies, consultants, insurers and enforcement agencies where required.
- Quality
- Maintain and continually improve upon the company’s BRCGS, FSC and PEFC certifications.
- Lead the quality team of 4 Full Time Employees to ensure Quality Objectives are achieved across Production.
- Ensure changes in legislation and standards are assessed and implemented appropriately.
- Provide advice, guidance and training to all employees on quality standards and emerging issues.
- Working in collaboration with Quality Assurance to ensure timely responses to all customer/supplier complaints and queries.
- Develop and monitor relevant QHSE KPIs.
- Use data, trends, audits, complaints, incidents and non-conformances to identify areas for improvement.
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective/preventative action programmes.
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement, prevention and accountability across the business.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce waste, improve quality and enhance operational performance.
- Provide regular performance reports and recommendations to the senior management team.
Experience & Qualifications
- Essential Experience
- Proven experience in a Quality, Compliance, QHSE or Technical management role within a manufacturing environment.
- Experience within either food manufacturing, food packaging, or a similarly regulated manufacturing environment.
- Strong practical experience of BRCGS standards and audit requirements.
- Strong knowledge and experience of ISO management systems.
- Experience managing internal and external audits.
- Strong understanding of Key UK legislation relating to quality, health & safety and environmental compliance.
- Proven experience managing non-conformances, corrective actions and root cause analysis.
- Experience working cross-functionally within a manufacturing organisation.
- Desirable Qualifications
- Relevant degree, HND or professional qualification in Quality, Compliance, Environmental Management, Health & Safety, Food Science or a related discipline.
- BRCGS Lead Auditor / Internal Auditor qualification.
- ISO 9001 Lead Auditor / Internal Auditor qualification.
- ISO 14001 Lead Auditor / Internal Auditor qualification.
- ISO 45001 Lead Auditor / Internal Auditor qualification.
- H&S Qualification- NEBOSH or IOSH.
- HACCP qualification.
- Membership of a relevant professional body.
