Electrical Engineer — Readout Systems & Device Characterisation
BioHarv Ltd · London (Somerset House) · 12-month fixed-term from November 2026, with potential to extend · £55,000
About BioHarv
BioHarv is an early-stage medtech company developing battery-free implantable and on-body devices for real-time physiological sensing. We design and build our own energy-harvesting materials, sensors and electronics in-house. This role sits at the heart of a funded R&D project developing a novel energy-harvesting material.
The role
We're hiring an electrical engineer to develop the readout electronics for our energy-harvesting material and to run the electrical characterisation that proves how it performs. You'll own the signal chain end-to-end, designing and building the circuits that capture low-level signals from the novel material, interfacing delicate samples to that electronics, and generating the measurement data at the core of the project. You'll work directly with the two founders across fabrication and device design.
Key responsibilities
- Design, build and iterate readout and measurement circuits for low-level signals from the harvesting fibres
- Fine gold-wire interfacing and micro-soldering of delicate fibre samples and mats under a microscope
- Contacting and connecting samples using conductive epoxy, connectors and fine wiring
- Set up and run electrical measurements (SMU/electrometer, oscilloscope, multimeter) with careful low-noise, low-signal technique
- Capture, process and plot measurement data (Python or MATLAB)
- Support comparative benchmarking of fibre output against control samples
- Work in a cleanroom environment for contamination-sensitive interfacing steps
- Keep clear, well-organised experimental and design records
- Demonstrated experience designing and building analogue/mixed-signal readout or measurement circuits, particularly for small signals
- Hands-on skill with standard electrical test instruments (SMU/electrometer, oscilloscope, multimeter) and low-noise measurement practice
- Micro-soldering and fine-wire handling under a microscope, and the precise practical hands this work depends on
- Data handling and scripting in Python or MATLAB
- Able to work independently in a small, fast-moving team
- Experience characterising piezoelectric, triboelectric or other sensor / energy-harvesting materials
- PCB design and embedded/microcontroller experience
- Applying controlled mechanical deformation for benchmarking
- General wet-lab competence (COSHH, solvent handling, sample prep)
What we offer
- £55,000, 12-month fixed-term contract from November 2026, with potential to extend depending on funding and progress
- A central role on a novel materials project, working directly with the founding team
- Exposure across the full path from material to functioning device
