This role will act as a Wetlands Science technical authority, with a strong technical base and experience in the appraisal and design of wetlands for the water sector and related industries, particularly in the aspect of treatment. The primary purpose of the role is to lead and co-ordinate wetlands design within a multi-disciplinary environmental / engineering team ensuring consistent quality and timeliness of output, as well as providing technical oversight for related projects across the business. The Technical Director will also serve as a figurehead for technical input to any pre-sales business development, engaging with key client stakeholders in positioning SBN and nurturing opportunities through development of compelling proposals that are converted into tangible projects. Role location is flexible, but the candidate must be willing and able to travel to client / SBN offices and project sites.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrable knowledge, experience and leadership to guide environmental and engineering teams in the following areas:
  • Technical Leadership: Leads delivery of wetlands design within SBN, coordinating design outputs across all technical disciplines, within the agreed timescale and budget; Undertakes the role of Technical Authority on all Wetlands Science related activity, and ensures that all project deliverables are compliant with our Quality Management System / SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment and Quality) governance procedures. Industry-recognised as an expert in Wetlands Science, providing knowledge and technical guidance to project teams and clients; Drives efficiency in design, monitoring and controlling design changes effectively, and working with clients and supply chain to value engineer solutions from a buildability perspective; Maintains a positive and solution-oriented approach to work, providing open and honest feedback; Contributes to the development of quality systems and procedures, driving continuous improvement and providing guidance and assistance to project teams. Ensures safety through design. Inputs to all relevant project Technical, Safety, Environmental and Sustainability reviews; Furthers the field Wetlands Science application in the water industry through research and development; Develops and maintains connections with other key technical leads in the business, particularly within Environmental Services.
  • Business Development and Client Relationship Management: Determines key client interests, drivers and stakeholders for wetlands opportunities. Communicates these to the wider business and contributes accordingly to relevant strategies; Uses knowledge and experience to proactively engage with clients, positioning SBN and offering its services, along with those of the wider business, to meet specific client challenges and develop strategic opportunities; Provides key technical input to proposals on wetlands schemes; Develops and maintains regular customer contacts for expanding product/service across multiple clients; Is seen by clients as an advocate for their organisation and as a trusted technical advisor, thus enhancing their perception of SBN and Binnies.
  • Commercial Acumen: Builds activity schedules and costs for production of wetlands-related environmental and engineering deliverables at tender stage, inputting into overall bid pricing, and manages these through project delivery to support Project Management function; Uses appropriate risk management processes to mitigate impacts of change; Works across various client contract forms, including the NEC / IChemE suites of contracts.
  • Effective Resource and Team Management: Responsible for technical resourcing of Wetlands Science related activity, highlighting any capacity and skills gaps, and feeding these into the wider SBN resource management and recruitment processes; Prepares succession planning and learning & development for their team, giving future leaders the opportunity to gain the experience needed to progress in their careers; Undertakes a mentoring role for other technical managers; Leads and directs others via effective delegation. Actively uses these skills to build trust and integrity in wider delivery teams. Embodies the Binnies ENGAGED values in their behaviours.

Educational Attributes:

  • Post-graduate qualification in Wetlands Science or related discipline, or any other specialised training, or experience, that makes the individual qualified to perform the job responsibilities;
  • Either holds, or will work towards, an industry-recognised, relevant chartered professional qualification.
