Binnies is recruiting Nature Based Solutions Consultants to join our Solutions By Nature (SBN) team. SBN works with nature to deliver environmental solutions spanning river restoration, wetland creation (including Integrated Constructed Wetlands), fish passage design and construction, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and rainwater management across the UK’s most ecologically sensitive environments.
Reporting to SBN Leads you will use your experience of whole‑lifecycle project delivery — from concept and outline design through to detailed design, planning and construction — to develop and deliver scaled nature‑based solutions for a wide variety of clients and industries. You will coordinate multi‑disciplinary environmental and engineering teams across Binnies, the RSK Group and an extensive specialist supply chain, while also contributing to business development, proposals and tenders for new opportunities.
Working alongside our existing team you will provide meaningful technical support and delivery capacity across our growing project pipeline and support collaboration with institutes and universities in developing the graduates and professionals of tomorrow through development programmes, certifications and training opportunities. The location of the role is flexible, but you must be willing and able to travel to client, Binnies and RSK offices and project sites throughout the UK. We offer a flexible approach to daily working arrangements to ensure a positive work‑life balance.
About The Role
In this role you will provide technical support across the full breadth of SBN’s disciplines with a particular focus on river restoration, wetlands and fish passage—but you will also contribute to other areas of the portfolio as needed.
The responsibilities include:
- River Restoration & Wetland Delivery
- Manage the delivery of technical elements for river restoration and wetland projects, coordinating multi‑disciplinary resources across internal teams and supply chain partners, and managing outputs to defined quality within agreed timescales and budgets.
- Apply knowledge of fluvial geomorphology, hydrological processes and ecological function to develop and review technically sound, deliverable solutions.
- Manage the design and specification of natural flood management, habitat creation, channel realignment and wetland construction schemes, working within the requirements of relevant environmental consenting and permitting frameworks.
- Collaborate with clients, stakeholders and the supply chain to value‑engineer solutions from a buildability perspective, seeking efficiency in design and managing change effectively.
- Fish Passage & Structures
- Provide technical input into the design and delivery of fish passage schemes, including upstream and downstream passage solutions and associated structures, coordinating with fisheries specialists and engineers as required.
- Engage with the relevant regulatory bodies, environmental organisations and statutory consultees to progress consents and build stakeholder confidence in our approach.
- Coordinate inputs from structural and civil engineering teams within fish passage and associated river structures to ensure solutions are delivered to a high standard.
- Technical Support & Quality
- Ensure Health, Safety and Wellbeing is at the heart of all projects and team activities, and that all site and design work reflects the sensitivity of the environments we operate within.
- Provide technical support, knowledge transfer to project teams and clients across all NbS disciplines.
- Ensure safety through design and maintain compliance with our Quality Management System and SHEQ governance procedures, whilst driving continuous improvement.
- Provide guidance and mentoring across the team.
- Monitor and control technical deliverables, identifying and addressing risks and opportunities to protect quality, programme and budget.
- Provide key input to proposals and tenders, creating appropriate scopes and methodologies, work breakdown structures and resourcing requirements, and supporting compelling technical submissions.
- Engage proactively with clients to identify and develop new opportunities, positioning Binnies and SBN as the go‑to partner for nature‑based and integrated water management solutions.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant environmental science or engineering discipline, or equivalent specialised training or experience that makes you qualified to perform the role’s responsibilities.
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or Scientist with a relevant professional institution.
- Experienced in the delivery of nature‑based solutions projects throughout their lifecycle — including at least two of: river restoration, wetland creation, fish passage design and construction, SuDS and surface water management, or blue‑green urban infrastructure.
- Demonstrable knowledge of the consenting, permitting and regulatory frameworks relevant to river and drainage works in England.
- Ability to coordinate project and proposal technical deliverables independently, balancing multiple priorities and working teams.
- Drive to develop and improve your skills and advance your career in the water and environmental sector.
- Embodies the Binnies ENGAGED values in their behaviours.
Desirable Requirements
- Knowledge of hydrological and hydraulic modelling tools relevant to river and drainage design (e.g., HEC‑RAS, InfoWorks ICM or equivalent).
- Experience of fisheries surveys or working alongside fisheries specialists on river projects.
- Experience of supporting business development and client‑facing technical proposals.
