Binnies is recruiting landscape architects with a particular interest in blue/green infrastructure and sustainable nature-based solutions. We pride ourselves on being a sustainability-led organisation and you would play a key role in ensuring our standards. With our roots in the water sector and growing focus on nature-based solutions, we are seeking landscape design and assessment specialists with a strong interest in this area.

Typical work you might get involved with includes the planning and design of nature-based solutions such as wetlands, river restoration projects, and Biodiversity Net Gain schemes across the UK water industry, along with flood risk management schemes for clients such as the Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales. We are currently also proud to be working in joint venture with Arup as the delivery partner for SESRO, supporting Thames Water in securing a Development Consent Order (DCO) for this nationally significant infrastructure project. Together, we are responsible for all design, consenting, and environmental services for the integrated scheme.

As one of the largest reservoirs in the country, this project not only aims to secure vital water resources but also aspires to deliver a future legacy of significant green infrastructure, leisure and recreational opportunities.

We are looking for an experienced Landscape Architect, either on the Pathway aiming for Chartership or recently Chartered. Candidates will have a keen interest in blue/green infrastructure, Biodiversity Net Gain, and nature-based solutions such as wetlands and river restoration projects, with some experience of their practical application. You will also have knowledge of the associated UK legislation and policy drivers.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be a strong advocate for landscape and the natural environment
  • Specialise either in landscape design, or landscape assessment, or provide input to both aspects, depending on their experience
  • Have strong graphics, drawing and presentational skills
  • Be collaborative, a team player thriving on working closely within large interdisciplinary teams

Essential Requirements:

  • A degree and post graduate diploma or master’s in landscape architecture, recognised by the UK Landscape Institute
  • Recent CMLI status (or on the Pathway and close to obtaining)
  • Passion and advocacy for landscape and the natural environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities, including able to guide and support less experienced landscape staff
  • For landscape design specialists: strong skills and experience in design of large infrastructure projects; skills in AutoCAD, Adobe Creative suite, and other design/presentation software
  • For landscape assessment specialists: strong skills and experience in LVIA work for large infrastructure projects; excellent report writing skills
  • Strong organisational, project, time and quality management skills
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experienced in providing landscape advice on major infrastructure projects including flood risk management, water utility, and renewable/energy
  • Ability to produce clear and persuasive landscape illustrations and visualisations
  • Experience in managing engagement with stakeholders and the public
  • Understanding of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Development Consent Order (DCO) processes
  • Proximity to either Chester or Redhill (our landscape hubs) is an advantage but not essential
  • Prior experience in environmental consultancy would be beneficial.
