The Opportunity:
- As our Technical Director (Civil Engineering) within the Flood, Coast & Maritime team, you’ll provide senior technical leadership across a diverse portfolio including:
- Flood risk management
- Coastal erosion and maritime infrastructure
- Water resources
- Forestry infrastructure
- Climate adaptation and nature‑based solutions
Reporting to the Client Services Director, you’ll act as a Technical Authority and a trusted adviser to clients and internal teams alike. You will work closely with our Digital Transformation team to ensure we are adopting the latest technology to keep us at the cutting edge of digital solutions and be a promoter and champion of innovative thinking.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Technical Leadership:
- Act as the Technical Authority ensuring the highest-quality deliverables across FCERM projects
- Provide thought leadership, drive knowledge sharing, and champion best practice
- Lead engineering design activities and set robust technical direction
- Promoting a right first‑time approach to producing quality deliverables
- Serve as Engineering Manager on major projects, guiding multi‑disciplinary teams
- Oversee delivery to scope, programme, budget and quality
- Coordinate and steer all technical elements of complex projects
- Build strong relationships with clients including the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, local authorities, and developers
- Support business development through technical insight and client engagement
- Influence resource planning: recruitment, skills development, training needs
- Mentor and develop engineers at all levels, supporting professional accreditation (ICE, CIWEM, etc.)
Minimum in‑office presence: 2 days per week.
About You:
We’re looking for a collaborative and inspirational technical leader with:
- A degree in Civil Engineering
- Chartered status with ICE, CIWEM or equivalent (Fellowship desirable)
- Proven experience delivering complex infrastructure projects, ideally in FCERM
- Strong track record of leading multi‑disciplinary teams
- Excellent client‑facing skills and the ability to broker agreement between diverse stakeholders
- Working knowledge of NEC contracts (PSC/ECC)
- A proactive, solutions‑driven mindset and a passion for engineering that makes a difference
