Binnies is recruiting a Consultant Ecologist to play a key role in our Chester‑based Ecology team (a CIEEM Registered Practice). The role focuses on high‑quality ecological surveys and assessments, biodiversity enhancement and restoration across projects in flood, coastal, water utilities, transport and renewable power sectors. It also supports natural capital projects and nature‑based solutions via our RSK joint venture.

About the Role

The successful applicant will:

  • Conduct ecological surveys and produce accurate reports following industry best practice guidelines.
  • Lead survey teams for specialisms you are qualified or licensed in, including data management and analysis.
  • Provide advice on survey requirements and protocols to clients and internal project teams.
  • Develop and write preliminary ecological appraisals, and contribute to Ecological Impact Assessments and Habitats Regulations Assessments.
  • Collaborate with our BNG, Nature Recovery, GIS and Digital specialists to employ technology for survey optimisation.
  • Participate in site visits across the West of England and Wales, and work from our Chester office as a full‑time or hybrid employee.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Ecology or related degree.
  • Several years’ experience in habitat surveys, preferably using UKHab (or Phase 1 in Wales).
  • Experience working under statutory survey licences.
  • Competence in standard survey guidance, techniques and equipment.
  • Ability to develop risk assessments to a suitable standard.
  • Experience delivering preliminary ecological appraisals for non‑complex sites.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence.
  • Knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, innovative technology in ecology.

Desirable Experience

  • Protected species survey licence.
  • Data analysis software experience.
  • Field survey data collection app experience (e.g. Field Maps, Survey123).
  • Ecological Impact Assessment experience.
  • Protected Species Mitigation licence.
  • Ecological Clerk of Works experience.
  • Previous consultancy experience.
