Orkney Islands Council is looking for an experienced environmental services manager with the drive, vision and commitment to take forward its future waste and recycling strategy and ensure services reflect the needs of local communities.
35 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Salary: £60,745 – £66,183 per year (£33.29 – £36.27 per hour), including Distant Islands Allowance. Employment type: Permanent.
Responsibilities
- Lead the implementation of the Waste Strategy to enhance Orkney's collection and processing of recyclable materials and support circular economy opportunities.
- Develop and deliver policies and strategies related to environmental services, manage collection and treatment of materials, and oversee kerbside collections for households across Orkney Mainland and the Isles.
- Supervise the Council’s two Waste Transfer Stations, three Household Waste Recycling Centres and two Recycling Centres, as well as various recycling points.
- Maintain excellent communication and facilitation skills to engage stakeholders while ensuring compliance with waste and recycling legislation.
- Lead and manage complex change projects and develop capability within the environmental services team.
Qualifications
- Qualified at SCQF level 8/9 (e.g., SVQ 4, HND, General Degree, Higher or Technical Apprenticeship), or possessing a minimum of five years of relevant experience in environmental services management.
- Strong knowledge of waste and recycling legislation.
- Excellent communication, facilitation and leadership skills.
- Proven ability to lead and manage complex change projects.
- Capability to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney.
- Subject to Level 1 Disclosure Scotland clearance.
