Overview of key responsibilities
Our Actions Against Police and State team are currently representing and assisting a number of bereaved families participating in the Lampard Inquiry into mental health inpatient deaths in Essex, and a variety of individuals and groups who have been impacted by undercover policing in the Undercover Policing Inquiry. We are seeking to recruit two motivated and capable paralegals to support this work. The role will consist of assisting with document review and drafting, legal research, client and counsel contact, attending hearings and conferences as well as general administration. There is the option for this position to count towards QWE (Qualifying Work Experience). Applicants should be aware that the team’s work engages many sensitive and potentially distressing issues including suicide and self-harm, violence including sexual violence, and discrimination.
Skills/knowledge requirements
- High graduate/post-graduate qualifications
- Able to work well within a team, and be able to take responsibility when working individually and able to use their initiative.
- Good administrative and case management skills within an office environment
- Good research and document analysis skills
- Experience, particularly in relation to public inquiries, inquests, police actions, and human rights, is desirable, but not essential
This role would suit someone who has completed a law degree, is completing the GDL or SQE on a part-time basis and/or has relevant prior experience working in the legal sector or connected NGOs and Charities. It may also suit someone with experience in a research position.
