Highview Power Carrington – LAES Project (FOAK)

  • 50 MW / 300 MWh Liquid Air Energy Storage Facility | Greater Manchester
  • First‑of‑a‑kind, commercial‑scale greenfield delivery of a 50 MW / 300 MWh Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) facility, supporting long‑duration energy storage and the UK’s net‑zero transition.
  • Proprietary LAES technology converts surplus renewable electricity into stored liquid air, with later pressurisation and reheating to drive turbines for electricity generation.

Role / Scope (Bilfinger UK)

  • Principal contractor for Mechanical, Electrical & Instrumentation (MEI) construction, including structural steelwork.
  • Delivery of complex, safety‑critical systems within a novel technology environment.
  • Working within a large high‑performing, multi‑disciplinary integrated delivery team on a technically challenging FOAK scheme.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sub‑Contractor Management: Collaborate with the Procurement and Project Management teams to identify suitable pipe fabrication sub‑contractors, evaluate their capabilities, experience and track record, and establish relationships to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Project Planning: Work closely with Project Managers to understand scope, timelines and resource requirements, and assist in creating comprehensive project plans including sub‑contractor schedules, manpower and materials.
  • Quality Compliance: Ensure pipe fabrications meet required quality standards and industry codes, conduct regular inspections and audits to identify and resolve potential issues promptly.
  • Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Compliance: Promote and enforce strict adherence to HSE policies during all stages of pipe fabrication, collaborate on risk assessments and implement necessary safety measures.
  • Cost Control: Monitor sub‑contractor costs, identify cost‑saving opportunities and work to optimize project budgets without compromising quality and safety.
  • Communication: Act as a liaison between internal departments, project teams and sub‑contractors, facilitating effective communication to keep all parties informed of progress, changes and challenges.
  • Problem Resolution: Address and resolve conflicts or issues arising during pipe fabrication projects promptly, collaborating with stakeholders to find practical solutions and mitigate risks.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of fabrication processes, agreements and related documentation, and prepare regular reports on progress and performance for management.
  • Continuous Improvement: Proactively identify improvement areas within fabrication operations, implement best practices and contribute to developing standard operating procedures to enhance efficiency and productivity.
