Bilfinger UK is a leading engineering and maintenance provider, supporting customers across the chemical & petrochemical, nuclear, oil & gas, pharmaceuticals & biopharma, power & energy, utilities, renewables and food & beverage markets. We enhance the efficiency of assets, ensuring a high level of availability and reducing maintenance costs. We have extensive experience in offshore and onshore facilities, specialising in asset management services throughout all life cycle phases from consulting, engineering, manufacturing, assembly, operations, maintenance, and decommissioning.

We are recruiting an experienced Lead Project Superintendent to take overall site-based construction ownership on the Highview Power (HVP) Liquid Air Energy Storage project at Carrington, Manchester. This is a senior leadership role with full day-to-day responsibility for the safe, programme-compliant and quality-assured delivery of all construction activities across the Stability Island scope – including the turbine train, generator, GSUT, PRU building, E-House and associated mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, piping and structural steelwork packages.

The Lead Project Superintendent will sit above and direct the discipline Superintendents covering E&I, Mechanical, Piping and Steelwork, providing the single point of construction leadership on site and reporting directly to the Construction Manager. The successful candidate will be a credible, experienced multi-discipline construction leader with a track record of delivering large-scale onshore EPC projects under NEC4 contract conditions, capable of integrating multiple subcontractors, vendors and trades into a single coherent workfront and protecting both safety and programme through to completions and handover.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide single-point construction leadership on site for the Stability Island scope, owning the safe, on-programme and quality-assured delivery of all E&I, Mechanical, Piping and Steelwork activities through to mechanical completion and handover.
  • Direct and coordinate the discipline Superintendents (E&I, Mechanical, Piping, Steelwork) and the Appointed Person for lifting, ensuring a single integrated workfront and clear lines of accountability across all packages.
  • Lead daily site coordination meetings, weekly look-aheads and interface meetings with civils, Highview, vendors (MAN, Baker Hughes, BRUSH and others) and statutory bodies.
  • Drive and enforce a zero-harm safety culture across the workforce; chair safety stand-downs, lead by example on the Life-Saving Rules, and intervene immediately on unsafe acts or conditions.
  • Own RAMS approval, Permit to Work coordination, lift plan review and SIMOPS management across all disciplines and subcontractors operating on site.
  • Manage and drive performance of all installation subcontractors against scope, programme, quality and HSEQ obligations; lead progress reviews, productivity reviews and corrective action where required.
  • Take ownership of the construction programme on site, working closely with Planning, Engineering and the Construction Manager to forecast progress, identify constraints, sequence work and protect critical path activities.
  • Coordinate receipt, preservation and installation readiness of major mechanical equipment, including STGO deliveries of turbine train components, generator, GSUT, GCB, IPB and CLR.
  • Manage interface with Highview as principal designer / client representative and with the QA/QC team for inspection, hold-point sign-off, NDT, LTQR / Data Dossier and handover documentation.
  • Lead workpack readiness reviews – confirm drawings, isometrics, RAMS, ITPs, materials and Permit to Work are in place before any work front is released.
  • Own the construction risk register, change control on site, NCR closure and the daily site report; escalate emerging risks to the Construction Manager and Project Manager promptly.
  • Support the Construction Manager in cost forecasting, manpower planning, plant and equipment requisitioning, and reporting against the NEC4 programme.
  • Mentor and develop the discipline Superintendents and the wider supervisory team; build a strong, accountable site leadership culture.
  • Provide construction input into the commissioning plan, system handover sequence and mechanical completion certification.
  • Comply fully with Bilfinger’s HSEQ Management System, the Construction Phase Plan, CDM 2015 duties as Principal Contractor and the project’s NEC4 contract framework.
Essential Requirements
  • Substantial multi-discipline construction management experience on large-scale onshore EPC projects in the chemical, petrochemical, power, energy, hydrogen, EFW or pharmaceutical sectors.
  • Demonstrable track record at Lead Superintendent, Construction Manager or Site Manager level on projects of comparable scale and complexity to HVP Carrington.
  • Proven experience leading and integrating multi-discipline teams across Mechanical, Piping, E&I and Structural Steelwork through to mechanical completion and handover.
  • Strong working knowledge of CDM 2015 duties as Principal Contractor and of Permit to Work, RAMS and SIMOPS management on live industrial sites.
  • Experience operating under NEC4 contract conditions, including programme management, early warnings and compensation events at site level.
  • Sound understanding of mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation and structural standards relevant to the scope (e.g. ASME B31.3, BS EN 1090, BS 7121, LOLER, BS 7671).
  • Demonstrable experience managing specialist subcontractors and major equipment vendors through delivery, installation, preservation and commissioning support.
  • SMSTS and CSCS Manager / Black Card.
  • First Aid at Work.
  • Strong leadership, communication and influencing skills – credible at the workface with the trades and at the table with client and vendor representatives.
  • Disciplined, programme-driven, safety-first approach with the confidence to stop the job when needed.
