BigHand offers technology solutions for busy legal professionals that provide data and insights to increase value and profits. Through our expert knowledge and innovative technology, we enable our customers to achieve enhanced efficiency, better decision-making and harness their competitive edge. We build with tomorrow in mind, transforming ideas into action and empowering our customers to succeed in a world of constant change.

About the role

As a Platform/DevOps Engineer, you will be working with a team of great engineers, delivery managers and architects on several topics including Cloud Platform Design, On-prem to Cloud Migration, Automated Deployment, Infrastructure Provisioning, Security Testing and more. You will work on different Platform Engineering, Platform Operations and Platform Security projects and collaborate with Product, Architecture and Software Engineering teams to deliver secure products and cloud platforms to support companywide OKRs and initiatives. You will contribute to BigHand Platform Engineering, Operations and security research and bring new knowledge inside the company.

What you’ll do

  • Champion DevSecOps: Promote secure ways of working and best practice across your team and the wider business. Build security into every stage of the project lifecycle.
  • Drive our cloud journey: Move on-prem services to a multi-region, highly available Azure platform (PaaS and IaaS). Help build our Azure landing zone and grow our container setup on Azure Kubernetes and Docker.
  • Automate and build reusable tooling: Automate manual build, release and operations work. Extend and secure our Terraform and PowerShell module library, and create reusable templates for the wider engineering team.
  • Keep global platforms healthy: Set up and manage monitoring, enterprise-grade dashboards and usage and uptime reporting, so issues and risks are found and fixed quickly.
  • Own incidents and maintenance: Prioritise incidents to meet SLAs, find root causes and fix them. Take part in planned maintenance during business hours and out of hours.
  • Collaborate and keep improving: Work with developers, architects, platform engineers and IT operations to design and deliver secure, compliant products. Write clear operational and security guides, and keep improving our processes, tools and cloud costs.

What we’re looking for

  • Azure expertise: Hands-on experience with Azure IaaS, PaaS and SaaS across compute, networking, security and data. You’ll have built Azure Landing Zones with the Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF) and led multi-region migrations from on-prem, covering rehosting, re-platforming and refactoring, not just lift and shift.
  • Infrastructure as Code and automation: Strong Terraform skills, plus scripting in PowerShell, Bash, SQL, KQL and Packer. Experience with Azure DevOps YAML pipelines and CI/CD is essential, including building security and code quality tools into those pipelines.
  • Containers: Experience setting up, automating and supporting Kubernetes and Docker environments, ideally on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
  • Security engineering: Hands-on experience with WAF, security logging, monitoring and alerting, privileged access management, secrets management and vulnerability management. You’ll also know security scanning tools (SAST, DAST, open-source and container scanning) and how to apply security controls across data, infrastructure and applications.
  • Resilience and delivery: Experience with business continuity (BCP) and disaster recovery, and with leading complex cloud projects end to end, from requirements through to support. You’ll also know Agile methods and operations practices well.
  • The right mindset: A collaborative team player who loves learning, solves problems quickly and analytically, and communicates and presents clearly. You’ll also have a strong grasp of information security and cloud security best practice.

How to prepare for a job interview at BigHand

✨Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

✨Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If BigHand uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

✨Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
