A quick look at the role.
As Compliance Manager, you’ll lead health, safety, and compliance across our Somerset Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) and Organics operations. You’ll drive performance, set and monitor targets, and ensure safe, compliant site operations. Regular travel across the county is required.
Your core responsibilities.
- Ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety legislation, including DSEAR, COSHH, and Animal By-products Regulations, and report on internal KPIs.
- Implement and maintain Biffa’s EHS and ISO standards on site, including EMS development and ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 compliance.
- Monitor contract compliance to avoid financial penalties and report monthly to the Authority on key obligations.
- Manage site audits, identify gaps, ensure actions are tracked, and maintain reports under the EQHS Management System.
- Lead onboarding and training for new employees, and coordinate training matrices across the region.
- Organise and minute Site Safety Improvement Team meetings, ensuring timely completion of actions.
- Support incident investigations using the Top Set methodology, delivering clear reports and improvement recommendations.
- Liaise with the Biffa HSQ team for expert guidance and support the Senior Business Manager in meeting contract requirements.
Requirements
- Relevant business qualification and formal safety certifications ( IOSH, NEBOSH in Environmental Management and Occupational Safety & Health)
- Experience in compliance, environment, quality, health and safety within public or private sector
- Strong leadership, planning, and workload management experience
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and business systems, with ability to analyse data, produce reports, and create presentations
- Knowledge of environmental and health & safety legislation, with ability to interpret and apply it practically
- Membership of relevant professional bodies ( CIWM, IQA) and understanding of financial processes
