Lead the Charge in Recycling: Join Us as a Contract Supervisor

Location: Somerset, based at Priorswood Depot, Taunton

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Working Pattern: 5 days out of 7, including weekends. Two consecutive rest days where possible (not both weekend days)

Vehicle: Company van and fuel card, with personal use available.

A quick look at the role.

As Contract Supervisor, you’ll play a key role in the day-to-day running of the Somerset Recycling Centres, ensuring the contract operates safely, efficiently and in line with Biffa and client requirements. You’ll be responsible for supervising site teams, managing resources, maintaining high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance, and making sure customers receive an excellent service. It’s a hands-on role combining site-based operational activity with administration, reporting and people management across the contracted sites.

Your core responsibilities:

  • Supervise the day-to-day operations across the Somerset Recycling Centres, ensuring sites run safely, efficiently and to the required standards.
  • Lead, support and motivate Site Managers, Site Operatives and agency staff, ensuring appropriate staffing, training and performance levels are maintained.
  • Ensure the contract remains fully compliant with health & safety, environmental legislation, permits, site working plans and Biffa procedures.
  • Plan and organise staff, agency resource, equipment and other operational requirements while keeping within agreed budgets.
  • Drive recycling performance and operational efficiency, ensuring materials are processed and dispatched safely, efficiently and in line with legislation.
  • Coordinate planned and reactive maintenance with the Facilities Management team, ensuring plant and equipment remain safe, compliant and operational.
  • Maintain strong relationships with the client, customers, contractors, regulators and members of the public, ensuring excellent service levels across the contract.
  • Monitor performance through audits, reporting and corrective actions, including health & safety inspections, incident investigations, compliance checks and continuous improvement activity.

Our essential requirements:

  • Experience managing local authority contracts, ideally within recycling, waste management or similar operational environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Health & Safety, environmental and transport legislation relevant to recycling centres and operational sites.
  • Proven experience managing large teams, with the ability to lead, motivate and develop people effectively.
  • Strong financial and budget management skills, with the ability to manage resources and deliver against operational targets.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the confidence to build effective relationships at all levels.
  • Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, managing changing priorities while maintaining high standards of service and performance.
