Transfer Station Manager – Sunderland
A quick look at the role
We’re looking for an experienced Transfer Station Manager to lead our Sunderland operation, ensuring the site is safe, compliant, efficient and delivering excellent service to our customers.
You’ll take responsibility for the day-to-day performance of the site, leading and developing your team while driving improvements in productivity, service and profitability.
With responsibility for the full site P&L, you’ll work closely with regional management to deliver business objectives, identify opportunities for growth and ensure the operation continues to perform at its best.

- Lead a safe and compliant operation, ensuring health & safety, environmental and company standards are consistently achieved.
- Manage site performance against agreed KPIs, driving improvements in productivity, service and cost control.
- Lead, coach and develop the team, creating an engaged and high-performing working environment.
- Take ownership of the site P&L, managing budgets and supporting sustainable year-on-year growth.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities across the operation.
- Support the growth strategy for the Sunderland facility, including opportunities around commodity sales.
- Build strong relationships across Biffa and with customers, suppliers and external partners.
- Share best practice and work collaboratively across the business to deliver effective waste solutions.
What we’re looking for
- A relevant COTC qualification.
- An IOSH Certificate.
- Experience as an Operations Manager, Transfer Station Manager or in a similar operational leadership role.
- Experience of people and health & safety management, ideally within a unionised environment.
- A proven track record of delivering against operational and service KPIs.
- Experience of driving continuous improvement.
- Strong commercial awareness, with P&L experience desirable.
- Good transport and logistics knowledge.
- Strong leadership, communication and relationship management skills.
- A proactive, solutions-focused approach and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
