The SHEQ Compliance Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining effective Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) management systems across the waste processing site, ensuring full compliance with UK legislation, permits, and local authority standards.

Your core responsibilities:

  • Lead development, implementation, and monitoring of site health, safety, environmental, and quality (SHEQ) systems in line with statutory and corporate requirements.
  • Ensure comprehensive risk assessments and safe systems of work across waste processing and AD operations (e.g. confined spaces, COSHH, biological agents, pressure systems).
  • Manage incident reporting, investigations, and root cause analysis, driving corrective actions and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee emergency preparedness and response, including fire safety, gas risks, and environmental incidents.
  • Deliver SHEQ training, inductions, and toolbox talks for employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Ensure compliance with Environmental Permits, Planning Conditions, and regulatory requirements; act as key liaison with regulators and auditors.
  • Monitor environmental performance (emissions, odour, waste, water discharge) and lead audits, inspections, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Maintain integrated management systems (ISO 9001, 14001, 45001), support audits, ensure document control, and provide SHEQ reporting and expert guidance to operations and senior management.

Our essential requirements:

  • NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent) with strong knowledge of UK health, safety, and environmental legislation.
  • Experience in waste management, recycling, or anaerobic digestion environments (desirable).
  • Proven ability to manage environmental permits and maintain effective regulator relationships.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and meet defined KPIs.
  • Excellent communication skills, including report writing, auditing, investigation, and the ability to influence and challenge at all levels.
  • Self-motivated and proactive, able to work independently, handle confidential information, and support site teams while managing conflict and driving positive outcomes.
