This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in maintaining and evolving a modern, secure, and resilient technology environment while supporting a business at the forefront of some of the UK's most innovative sectors.

As an Operations Engineer, you'll be responsible for supporting and enhancing our IT infrastructure and core business systems, ensuring they remain secure, reliable, and fit for the future. Whether you're delivering service improvements, implementing new technologies, resolving complex technical issues, or helping shape the future of our IT Operations function, you'll have the opportunity to make a genuine impact in a collaborative, supportive, and forward-looking environment.

What you'll be doing:

  • Take ownership of one or more core business systems, acting as a technical lead and supporting colleagues through knowledge sharing and documentation.
  • Support, maintain and continuously improve our IT infrastructure and systems across all locations, including Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Exchange, Intune, HubSpot, MRI Suite and Citrix.
  • Deliver infrastructure upgrades, system administration, patch management and new technology implementations, ensuring compliance with Cyber Essentials Plus, ISO 27001 and internal standards.
  • Work closely with our Managed Service Provider to maintain a secure, reliable and high-performing IT environment.
  • Provide 2nd/3rd line technical support, managing incidents, changes and problems while carrying out root cause analysis to prevent recurring issues.
  • Monitor and respond to cyber security incidents, manage vulnerabilities and contribute to maintaining a secure-by-design environment.
  • Help maintain IT policies, technical documentation and operational procedures while promoting a culture of continuous improvement and security awareness.

About You:

  • Solid problem-solving skills, with proficient attention to detail.
  • An in-depth experience of supporting the Windows desktop environment and Office 365 suite.
  • Confident in fault diagnosis across technologies & platforms and experience of rectifying faults within established SLAs.
  • Experience operating in a change managed environment.
  • Ability to competently act as the technical point contact of escalation for incidents.
  • Experience of creating technical documentation.
  • Ability to communicate with the wider team and business to ensure all relevant parties are informed about key updates.
  • Experience supporting, implementing, and maintaining Business Applications.
  • Able to manage their time effectively.
  • Ability to translate Business/operational requirements into effective solutions.
  • Windows Server 2016 through to 2022, and experience of Intune, Active directory, SQL, SharePoint, Power Platform, Entra ID, Azure Cloud Services, HubSpot or MRI would be desirable.

How to prepare for a job interview at Bidwells LLP

Brush Up on Your Technical Skills

For an IT consulting role, be ready to demonstrate your technical prowess. You might face questions on systems integration, cloud technologies, or even troubleshooting specific software. If you have experience with tools like AWS, Azure, or even specific programming languages, make sure you can talk about them fluently.

Showcase Your Problem-Solving Approach

IT consulting is all about solving problems for clients. Think about how you can illustrate your approach to a past challenge using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). It's a great way to show how you tackle complex issues and come up with effective solutions.

Know the Business Impact of IT Solutions

When discussing your experiences, focus not just on the tech solutions you implemented, but also on their business impact. Employers want to see that you can connect IT with organisational goals. Prep examples that highlight how your tech contributions improved efficiency or reduced costs for past clients or projects.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

Since IT consulting often involves teamwork and client interactions, expect behavioural questions that assess your interpersonal skills. Be prepared with examples that demonstrate your adaptability, communication skills, and how you handle client feedback. Before the interview, think of situations where you worked closely with clients to create effective IT strategies or changes.
