About the Role
- Deliver reading interventions on both a 1:1 and small‑group basis
- Promote reading for pleasure activities across the prison
- Support prisoners with low literacy confidence and reading barriers
- Run reading clubs, workshops and engagement activities
- Support peer mentors and reading initiatives
- Work collaboratively with education, library and prison staff
- Contribute towards prison‑wide reading strategy activities
- Support learners with neuro‑diversity and additional learning needs
- Maintain learner records and attendance data
- Encourage progression into further education and employability pathways
Delivery may take place in classrooms, residential units, workshops, library spaces, and other prison environments. The role will also include at least one evening regime session per week to ensure working prisoners can access support.

- Has experience supporting literacy, reading or education programmes
- Can engage and motivate reluctant or low‑confidence learners
- Has strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Is organised, reliable and adaptable
- Can work professionally within a structured custodial environment
- Understands professional boundaries and safeguarding responsibilities
- Can support learners with additional learning needs or neuro‑diversity
Desirable Experience
- Experience in prison education, adult education, ESOL, literacy intervention, mentoring, neuro‑diversity support, or rehabilitation programmes would be highly beneficial.
Qualifications
- Essential: Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience in education, literacy, mentoring or a related field
- Desirable: Teaching qualification, Literacy or phonics experience, ESOL experience, Safeguarding training, SEND or neuro‑diversity awareness training
