We have an exciting opportunity for a Housing Solicitor to play a vital role in providing support and representation to our clients within our East Sussex based service.

Location: Brighton (Hybrid Working Available and the role will cover our East Sussex offices)

Salary: Up to £44,607 per annum (depending on experience)

Hours: 37 hours per week (Monday – Friday)

Contract: Permanent

About the Role

This is an opportunity for an experienced Housing Solicitor to join our Housing Team. You will also undertake specialist legal advice, casework and representation for BHT Sussex clients in housing matters in relation to an existing casework allocation. Through your work in our busy and committed housing team, you will be contributing to the provision of a high quality free legal service to some of the most disadvantaged and marginalised members of the community. The Housing Solicitor will assist with supervision and file reviews of the housing team. The Housing Solicitor will advise and undertake legally aided casework for BHT Sussex clients in relation to housing, homelessness, disrepair and other housing related issues, in relation to an existing casework allocation, to include closing cases when necessary, billing and preparing them for billing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake legal casework on housing matters in relation to homelessness, disrepair and other housing related issues in accordance with current quality standards including the Specialist Quality Mark and SRA.
  • Assist clients to resolve their housing problems including interviewing and advising clients, assessing courses of action, advising on legal procedures, and preparing cases for County Court and High Court.
  • Undertake cases at the In Court Duty Scheme.
  • Be responsible for the case management and accurate time recording for a casework allocation, including ensuring that cases are closed and billed promptly.
  • Assist with supervision and file reviews of the housing team.

Person Specification

To be successful in the role of Housing Solicitor you will need to have great communication skills and be committed to the values of BHT Sussex. Some of the key skills and experience you will need to bring with you include:

  • Admitted solicitor with a current Practicing Certificate.
  • Experience of running publicly funded cases in compliance with Legal Aid Agency specification and quality standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Proven ability to meet targets whilst delivering a high-quality service for clients.
  • An understanding of welfare benefit regulations and debt issues, particularly how these impact on homelessness.
