Saint Francis Hospice is situated in the village of Havering‑atte‑Bower, near the London/Essex border, just 4 miles from Romford. The hospice serves people of outer East London, Brentwood and parts of West Essex, providing 18 hospice beds and community palliative care services. Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust are the local hospital trust and hold the NHS contracts for all consultants in palliative care in the region.
Main duties of the job:
- Provide consultant‑level input into the hospice ward, partnering with another consultant, leading and supporting non‑consultant medics and the multidisciplinary team to deliver holistic care for patients with complex, advanced or progressive life‑limiting conditions.
- Key member of the weekly ward MDT.
- Provide consultant‑level input into the community team with clinical and strategic focus on one of the boroughs served by Saint Francis Hospice, including direct visiting support for complex cases and indirect support through clinical advice, education and quality improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to the support, training and development of medical trainees and the learning environment of the hospice staff and external care providers.
- Be part of the regional consultant on‑call service covering BHRUT hospitals, the hospice and the community out of hours.
Person specification:
- Full registration with the General Medical Council.
- Be on the specialist register for Palliative Medicine or be within six months of entry at the time of interview.
- Demonstrable knowledge of all aspects of specialist palliative care.
- Wide experience of specialist palliative care in different settings.
- Master's degree or other higher degree in a relevant subject.
- Poster(s) or presentation(s) at a regional, national or international forum.
- Research publications.
- Evidence of a clear area of interest relevant to BHRUT and/or hospice (+/- national) strategy.
