We currently have a vacancy for an experienced Builders Merchant Yard Operative to support the smooth running of our busy yard by handling, storing and managing building materials. Assisting customers with orders whilst maintaining a safe and organised yard area, contributing to the overall efficiency and ensuring excellent customer service at all times. This is a varied, hands‑on position in a fast‑paced outdoor environment, requiring a proactive approach, good teamwork, and a strong focus on safety and accuracy.
Key Responsibilities- Assist customers with loading and unloading building materials
- Provide excellent customer service, answering queries and directing customers to products or staff
- Ensure customer orders are picked accurately and fulfilled in a timely manner
- Receive, check, and store incoming deliveries
- Prepare materials for dispatch, ensuring correct labelling and packaging
- Operate forklifts, pallet trucks, and other equipment (training provided where required)
- Maintain accurate stock records and assist with inventory counts
- Carry out regular yard checks to ensure cleanliness, organisation, and safety
- Monitor stock levels and report shortages or damaged goods
- Ensure all tools and machinery are kept in good working condition and report defects promptly
- Contribute to maintaining a safe, efficient, and well‑presented yard environment
- Previous experience in a builder’s merchant, warehouse, or yard environment is essential
- Ability to handle heavy materials and carry out manual handling tasks safely
- Forklift licence desirable (training can be provided)
- Basic knowledge of building materials is advantageous
- Strong communication and customer service skills
