The Junior Accountant supports senior team members in delivering high-quality accounting, bookkeeping, and compliance services to a portfolio of clients. This role is ideal for individuals with some prior experience in practice who are looking to progress their career. The individual will already have some form of qualification and may be studying further toward ACCA or ACA. The role involves preparing accounts, assisting with tax returns, performing bookkeeping tasks, and working with clients across various industries.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in preparing year-end accounts for sole traders and limited companies
- Perform bookkeeping duties including posting invoices, bank reconciliations, and journals
- Prepare management accounts under supervision
- Process VAT returns and ensure compliance with MTD (Making Tax Digital)
- Process quarterly MTD for Income Tax and Self Assessment returns
- Assist in preparing corporation tax (CT600) and self-assessment tax returns
- Support in handling client queries on tax matters (basic level)
- Maintain tax deadlines and ensure timely submissions
- Communicate with clients to obtain records and resolve bookkeeping or accounting queries
- Support onboarding of new clients, including setting up software and collecting KYC/AML information
- Assist with queries from clients in relation to basic bookkeeping or accounting queries including software support (Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent)
- Maintain accurate working papers and documentation following practice standards
- Ensure compliance with UK GAAP and HMRC requirements
- Support workflow management and meet practice deadlines
Key Skills & Competencies
- Strong numeracy and problem-solving skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Good understanding of basic accounting principles
- Proficiency in Excel; experience with cloud software (Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent) is a plus
- Excellent communication and client-handling skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
- Eagerness to learn and progress in an accountancy practice environment
Qualifications & Experience
- AAT Qualification or studying ACCA or ACA (full or part-qualified)
- Previous experience in an accountancy practice (12 months+ minimum)
- Good academic background including Maths and English
- Right to work in the UK
