Infrastructure Engineer

The department is responsible for the design, development and operation of all technology-related infrastructure to support the business, including on-premises and cloud environments.

We operate a fully virtualized infrastructure using VMware and Microsoft Azure to host a mix of Microsoft Windows and Linux servers running both third party and in-house applications. The on-premises hardware platform is built on Dell Compute, Pure Storage, Cisco networking, and a resilient 10Gbps WAN connecting our datacenter locations and cloud providers.

This new hire will expand our current team and accelerate progress on redesigning our infrastructure to improve our use of public cloud.

Role Overview:

This role has two elements:

1. To undertake project work to improve and evolve the technology infrastructure. Projects will typically include designing and deploying upgrades or design changes to major infrastructure components, or introducing new systems into the business. The candidate will be expected to work on projects as required and lead smaller initiatives wherever possible.
2. To support, maintain and operate the firm’s critical technology infrastructure, including being involved in our on-call rotas. The candidate will work closely with suppliers and service providers, as well as directly with users and other internal technology teams to ensure a high level of service is maintained.

Candidate Requirements:

The ideal candidate will:

1. Understand the principles of designing and operating highly resilient systems, utilising hybrid cloud and Infrastructure-as-Code principles across multiple providers.
2. Be able to demonstrate an interest in technology and an ability to learn new skills and technologies through exposure on the job.
3. Be able to work effectively as part of a small team, and to build good relationships with traders, developers, and other business users.
4. Maintain high quality documentation and work management, adhering to internal policies and standards for planning and change control.
5. Be able to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
6. Remain calm and be able to prioritize under pressure, and demonstrate good time management and planning.
7. Be committed to providing excellent customer service.
8. Be genuinely interested in the challenges of supporting a dynamic trading environment.

Required skills:

1. IaaS principles with specific knowledge and experience of Microsoft Azure.
2. Microsoft identity services, including Active Directory and Entra.
3. Windows Server and desktop, File Services, DNS, Group Policy.
4. PowerShell scripting, and development of robust and reusable PowerShell modules.
5. An awareness of virtualization concepts and a basic level of experience with VMware vSphere.
6. Working knowledge of IP networking concepts.
7. Strong general IT skills, especially Excel and other Office products.
8. Experience of supporting users in a Windows environment.
9. An aptitude for learning and supporting unfamiliar technologies.

Any of the following will be an advantage:

1. Hashicorp Terraform.
2. Amazon AWS.
3. Veeam Backup and Replication.
4. MacOS and Linux operating systems.
5. Microsoft SQL Server high-availability.

Responsibilities for this role include:

1. Day-to-day support of in-house and third party systems, including out-of-hours support as part of a rota both in the office and on-call.
2. Specifying, planning and implementing improvements to systems.
3. Monitoring and maintaining the firm’s systems on-premises and in the cloud.
