Job Title: Night Shift Engineer
Location: London, City of London
Shift Pattern: Permanent Nights, 4 on / 4 off, 10pm - 10am
BGIS is seeking a skilled and proactive Night Shift Engineer to join our critical facilities team in London. Reporting to the Site Manager, you will be responsible for maintaining all critical building services and ensuring operational resilience throughout the night shift.
The successful candidate will carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), respond to reactive and emergency breakdowns, monitor building systems, and ensure all mechanical and electrical assets remain fully operational within a critical environment.
Key Responsibilities- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on all mechanical and electrical plant and equipment in accordance with site schedules.
- Respond to reactive maintenance requests and emergency breakdowns, ensuring issues are resolved promptly and safely.
- Monitor critical building systems throughout the night, including HVAC, UPS, generators, LV systems, and BMS controls.
- Investigate and diagnose faults using BMS data, alarm management systems, and engineering expertise.
- Ensure environmental conditions are maintained within agreed operating parameters at all times.
- Complete all maintenance activities in line with statutory requirements, BGIS procedures, and client expectations.
- Operate Permit to Work and Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) systems safely and effectively.
- Support and supervise specialist subcontractors undertaking maintenance and repair activities.
- Complete all maintenance records, service reports, and compliance documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Maintain asset information and close work orders using the CMMS system (e.g. Maximo).
- Ensure plant rooms and engineering areas are kept clean, safe, secure, and well-organised.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and proactively report defects or risks.
- Produce dynamic risk assessments, near miss reports, and detailed shift handover notes.
- Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety policies and safe working practices.
- Deliver excellent customer service and maintain a professional image when interacting with client representatives.
- City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent in Electrical or Electro-Mechanical Engineering.
- Electrical qualification such as 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (or equivalent).
- Experience working within a commercial building, critical environment, data centre, or corporate facilities environment.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills across M&E systems.
- Experience working on permanent night shifts.
- HVAC or Air Conditioning experience.
- Knowledge of UPS systems, generators, switchgear, and critical power infrastructure.
- Previous experience using BMS and CMMS systems such as Maximo.
- Strong problem-solving and fault-finding ability.
- Calm and effective under pressure.
- Excellent communication and reporting skills.

- Ability to work independently during night shifts.
