JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Estimating Engineer ROLE: Hard Services Estimating
OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To support the Estimating Team in the development, coordination, and submission of cost estimates for new bids, contract renewals, and variations within the Building Services (Hard FM) sector. The Estimating Engineer will play a critical role in producing accurate, timely, and competitive pricing models in line with client specifications, service delivery requirements, and industry standards. The role is designed as a pathway into senior roles within Hard Services Estimating
KEY TASKS / RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct detailed site surveys and building tours to assess service requirements and collect technical information.
- Review and validate asset lists provided by clients, identifying any discrepancies or missing information.
- Prepare labour loading calculations using industry-standard models such as SFG20 or client-specified templates.
- Liaise with specialist subcontractors and supply chain partners to obtain accurate quotations for non-core or specialist activities.
- Assist in the preparation of bid documentation, including pricing schedules, tender submissions, and technical responses.
- Participate in internal mid-bid and final adjudications to present estimating approaches, discuss risk mitigation strategies, and highlight commercial or operational improvements.
- Collaborate with operational delivery teams to ensure alignment between estimated solutions and practical delivery.
- Maintain and update estimating tools, cost databases, and historic pricing records for future use and benchmarking.
- Identify opportunities for value engineering and cost savings during the estimating process.
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and quality standards during all stages of bid preparation.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word (basic level essential, intermediate desirable).
- Minimum of GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.
- Strong technical understanding of building services systems and associated assets (mechanical, electrical, or both).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong numeracy and analytical skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and asset registers.
- Comfortable working independently and within cross-functional teams.
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet fixed deadlines.
Desirable Skills & Qualifications
- NVQ, ONC/HNC, or equivalent engineering qualification in Mechanical or Electrical discipline.
- Experience working within Hard FM, Building Services, or a Facilities Management environment.
- Previous involvement in the estimating, pricing, or bidding of FM contracts.
- Knowledge of CAFM systems, procurement processes, and service delivery models.

Training: Full training will be provided following a skills gap analysis. The role includes a development pathway towards a fully qualified Estimator, with exposure to all stages of the bid lifecycle and client engagement process.
