This isn t tutoring as you know it.
We re looking for mentors, motivators, and spark-pluggers not classroom replicators.
This role is about connection, curiosity, and compassion. You ll work 1:1 with neurodivergent, emotionally overwhelmed, or disengaged young people. Many of them have hated school. You won t teach at them. You ll sit beside them, earn their trust, and help them rebuild from wherever they re at.
You ll thrive in this role if:
You don t need a whiteboard to teach.
You re patient, grounded, and know how to laugh.
You connect with kids who are anxious, withdrawn, or difficult .
You can adapt on the spot a worksheet, a walk, a conversation.
You re here to make actual impact, not just tick boxes.
About the work:
1:1 Alternative Provision tutoring and mentoring
Community venues, homes, or libraries (no school setting)
Flexible, part-time hours (term-time mostly)
Ages typically 7 16, some EHCP or high-needs placements
Rates are £30 per hour
You ll need to be:
Self-employed, with your own public liability insurance
Enhanced DBS checked (on the Update Service)
Able to drive and travel locally (Covering Nottinghamshire)
Comfortable working solo, 1:1, sometimes in tricky emotional spaces
A strong communicator who can provide brief weekly updates on progress
Bonus if you re:
A former teacher who s done with the system
A coach, mentor, therapist, or youth worker at heart
Creative, calm, emotionally intelligent
Someone who believes that behaviour is communication
