GLL is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated Swimming Teachers to join our teams across the London Borough of Waltham Forest. If you have the skills, passion and ambition to join us as a Swimming Teacher, there has never been a more exciting time to become part of our team. This is more than just a Swimming Teacher job – it’s a career where you can make a real difference to the health, confidence and wellbeing of our local community.

As a Swimming Teacher, you will play a key role in developing the swimming skills of customers across Waltham Forest. This is your opportunity to deliver safe, engaging and consistent swimming lessons that help people of all ages build confidence in the water and develop an invaluable life skill.

As an experienced Swimming Teacher, you’ll thrive on helping people achieve their potential, adapting your approach to meet each pupil’s individual needs, abilities and learning styles. You’ll use your knowledge of swimming practices, progression and teaching techniques to deliver effective lessons and support swimmers as they develop their skills.

Naturally, there will be some administration involved, but most of your time will be spent doing what you do best: teaching people to become stronger, safer and more confident swimmers. Whether delivering group lessons or one-to-one sessions, you’ll have the opportunity to support everyone from young children taking their first steps in the pool to adults developing their swimming abilities.

Waltham Forest is a diverse and vibrant borough, and our leisure centres play an important role in supporting healthier, more active communities. As part of GLL, you’ll help make swimming accessible to local residents, encouraging participation, building confidence and helping people enjoy the lifelong benefits of being active.

We’re looking for Swimming Teachers who are approachable, patient and enthusiastic, with the ability to build trust, motivate pupils and encourage progress through positive feedback and praise. You’ll need to hold an STA Award or Certificate-level qualification or a Swim England Level 2 qualification, and ideally have the National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers & Coaches. Knowledge of health and safety requirements, relevant legislation and safeguarding procedures is also essential.

What you’ll do

  • Maintain a positive image of GLL and our leisure centres across Waltham Forest by providing customers and members of the public with a welcoming, helpful and professional poolside service.
  • Deliver high-quality swimming lessons that support the needs and abilities of pupils from across the local community.
  • Follow the commitments outlined in the Customer Charter, ensuring that expected service standards are consistently maintained.
  • Maintain the safety and control of pupils throughout swimming lessons, ensuring all relevant pool safety procedures, operational regulations and health and safety requirements are followed.
  • Encourage pupils to enrol on further swimming courses and short courses, helping them continue their development and build confidence in the water.
  • Assist with new enrolments and re-enrolments as required by the General Manager.
  • Understand and follow GLL’s safeguarding policies and procedures, including the relevant Swim School behaviour policy.
  • Record and complete swimming awards in line with expected standards, ensuring pupils achieve the appropriate learning outcomes.
  • Deliver lessons in accordance with the Swim School product manual, ensuring a consistent, high-quality approach across our centres.
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive and supportive environment where customers of all ages, backgrounds and abilities feel welcome.

As a leader in the leisure industry, GLL can also offer you opportunities to develop your skills, broaden your experience and progress your career, with a variety of roles and career pathways available across our organisation.

What you need

  • STA Award or Certificate-level qualification or Swim England Level 2 Swimming Teacher qualification.
  • Ideally, the National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers & Coaches.
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements and relevant legislation.
  • An understanding of safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a friendly, patient and encouraging approach.
  • The ability to motivate pupils, adapt teaching methods to individual needs and create a safe, enjoyable learning environment.
  • A commitment to delivering excellent customer service and supporting the health and wellbeing of the Waltham Forest community.
