Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow (Tier 1) in Acute Paediatrics and Neonatology based at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital. The appointee will be part of a busy and cheerful department, with a clear emphasis on delivering top quality care to local children and young people. There is close joint working between consultants and the specialist paediatric nursing team, and good support for junior medical staff. The post is available immediately.
Main duties of the job
There are just over 5,000 admissions each year to the paediatric ward, with around 2,600 being emergency admissions. The ward provides 22 beds, including one high-dependency bed and two en-suite oncology cubicles. The Assessment Unit is open between 0700-2100 on weekdays and 0900-1800 on weekends. In addition to general paediatric patients, cases from ENT, trauma, orthopaedics, urology and general surgery are handled, both elective and emergency. Care of children and young people admitted with surgical emergencies is shared between the surgical team concerned and the paediatric on-call team. The neonatal unit is well equipped and is effectively self-sufficient for most in-born premature babies who are 27 weeks of gestation and beyond. Babies born under 27 weeks are transferred. There are regular teaching sessions and joint radiology meetings. Prospective cover of annual leave, study leave and statutory days is expected.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
The post includes responsibility for the admission of all acute cases and their management on the ward as well as the follow-up of previous in-patients in the outpatient department. Clinical duties are shared between the thirteen first-on-call staff. Two people have responsibility for the neonatal unit and the others cover the children’s ward and outpatient clinics. There is one tier-1 doctor on duty at night and two tier-1 doctors on-call in the day. These duties are rotated regularly. The appointed doctors will also participate in 1:8 on calls, which include weekday and weekend nights as well as long days. The usual on-call shifts are 12.5 hours long, while regular days are 8 hours long.

- Essential criteria: Fully registered medical practitioner with the GMC.
- Desirable criteria: MRCPCH Parts 1A and 1B.
Experience
- Essential criteria: The post holder must be a qualified medical practitioner having worked a minimum of one year full-time in general paediatrics and neonates. This must be explicit in the application and will be evaluated during the interview.
- Desirable criteria: UK experience, including ST-level experience in this specialty (excluding foundation modules) by the time of appointment. APLS, NLS and child protection courses, with a commitment to complete any that are not yet finished.
Ability/Knowledge
- Essential criteria: Good communication skills and the ability to assess and manage normal and disordered children. Willingness to work without immediate supervision, with awareness of individual limits. Strong written and oral communication, time-management, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
- Desirable criteria: Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised and make decisions. Effective report writing and communication within a multidisciplinary team.
Audit
- Essential criteria: Knowledge of the audit cycle and participation in research or clinical audit. Willingness to teach and evidence of continuing professional development.
- Desirable criteria: Previous experience of audit projects with relevant evidence. Formal training in research or teaching methodology.
