Cunliffe ward at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital is a progressive, supportive environment with a dynamic and motivated team. We consider ourselves to be a friendly supportive ward and very keen to recruit dedicated and enthusiastic permanent nurses wishing to gain experience in Nephrology. The ward has a specialist interest in renal medicine and provides both Haemodialysis (HD) and Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) for both acute and chronic patients in the ward setting. There are five beds designated for patients receiving haemodialysis, four of which are located in the Renal High Dependency bay. Service users with Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), advanced Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), on dialysis therapies or who have previously received a kidney transplant requiring medical care will be nursed on this ward as well as those with general medical conditions. Patients on Cunliffe Ward can present with a variety of conditions with differing holistic and social needs. Such needs present a challenge for the nurses on the ward enabling them to develop their nursing skills to a high standard. Individualised care is a priority for the team and the Fundamentals of Care tool is most frequently used as part of the assessment framework process.
Main duties of the job:
- To assess the patients' nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care in order to ensure the delivery of effective patient care.
- To ensure the principles set out in the Fundamentals of Care are incorporated into daily practice to ensure a high quality service for the patients and clients.
- To maintain patients' nursing records to ensure information is accurate and up to date and to ensure that patients and carers/relatives are involved in the planning and delivery of care.
- To take a proactive role in the management of risk, i.e. risk assessments, reporting incidents and near misses.
- To undertake all reasonable precautions for a safe and secure environment for self and others in accordance with Health and Safety legislation reporting any areas of concern to the Nurse in Charge.
- With the relevant experience act as a supervisor, mentor or assessor for students or Healthcare support workers and develop own skills and knowledge and contribute to development of others.
- To maintain active status on NMC Register and act in accordance with the NMC Code and guiding documents.

Further development opportunities and training programs are also available, e.g. Renal Degree Modules and Haemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis experience. We have close links with the renal unit and work alongside renal specialist nurses and this also provides exciting opportunities for career progression to specialise within Nephrology when relevant experience is gained.
