The Neurophysiology is a pan BCUHB service across North Wales forming part of the Diagnostic and Specialist Clinical Services (DSCS). The Directorate includes Pathology, Radiology, Audiology, and Medical Physics. Currently we offer our service at all three acute hospital sites and in addition at Llandudno General Hospital, and Deeside Community Hospital.

The Neurophysiology Department collaborates with other Departments, Hospitals and academic institutions in North Wales, as part of the North Wales Clinical School. Substantial numbers of medical students, predominantly from Cardiff but also from Bangor, Manchester and Liverpool have clinical placements in North Wales both in hospital and in general practice. The Health Board recognises the importance of Neurophysiology in delivering national and local standards in many aspects of health care, and are investing in the expansion of Neurophysiology and Neurosciences. Main duties of the job

  • Provision with medical colleagues of a comprehensive elective and emergency service covering complex investigation, including single fibre, complex NCS and simple EMG, and reporting of EEG.
  • Reporting of ambulatory and home-hub video ambulatory EEG reporting, evoked potentials and straightforward entrapment nerve conduction studies (including CTS, ULN and Peripheral Neuropathy Screening) carried out by Clinical Physiologist.
  • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and the proper functioning of the service, including the supervision and clinical screening of patients for the physiologist lead investigation of entrapment neuropathies.
  • Contribute and lead on all aspects of Clinical Neurophysiology in undergraduate and postgraduate education and teaching (physiological and medical).
  • Contribute and support the Wales Deanery (HEIW) and BCUHB medical undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programme.
  • Liaise and support placements and training for both undergraduates and junior doctors.
  • Facilitate, develop, and support consultant trainers and teachers, ensuring there is a clear framework for the delivery of medical education, and the opportunity to enhance clinical and teaching skills through Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Mentoring is crucial in Clinical Neurophysiology. The postholder will receive senior mentorship while also fostering learning and development among junior staff.

  • Essential criteria
  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent
  • GMC Specialist Registration in Neurophysiology or within 6 months of obtaining CCT from date of interview
  • Evidence of Continued Professional Development (CPD)
  • Desirable criteria
    • MRCP or MRCPH or MRCS
    • MSc, MD, PhD or equivalent higher degree in Clinical Neurophysiology, Neurology or Medical Education
    • Postgraduate qualifications in teaching e.g., PG Cert MedEd
    • Attendance at an appropriate management course

    Experience

    • Essential criteria
    • Experience in the instigation of clinical audit
    • Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching including theory & practical teaching sessions
    • Experience of supervision of junior medical staff and relevant staff in other disciplines
    • Evidence of participation in audit activities

    • Previous experience in Clinical Neurology - Able to express clinical opinion clearly and concisely in writing
