This 12-month maternity leave cover post offers an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Occupational Therapist to support patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) and within the community. The role involves undertaking holistic occupational therapy assessments, identifying functional needs, supporting safe discharge planning, and facilitating timely intervention to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions. Working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, the post holder will assess patients in ED and community settings, recommend appropriate equipment and support services, and promote independence and wellbeing. Excellent clinical reasoning, communication, and organisational skills are essential to deliver person-centred care across a fast-paced and dynamic service.

Main duties of the job

The Band 6 Occupational Therapist will provide specialist occupational therapy assessment and intervention for patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) and within community settings. The post holder will assess functional ability, mobility, cognition, environmental factors, and support needs to facilitate safe and timely discharge from ED, reduce hospital admissions, and promote independence.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the therapist will develop and implement person-centred care plans, recommend appropriate equipment and adaptations, and coordinate referrals to community services and support networks. The role involves undertaking home and community assessments, providing occupational therapy advice and interventions, and ensuring effective risk assessment and management.

The post holder will maintain accurate clinical records, contribute to service development, and support quality improvement initiatives. They will provide clinical leadership, supervision, and support to junior staff and students where appropriate, while ensuring practice remains evidence-based, professionally accountable, and aligned with local and national policies and standards.
