The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is recruiting an Apprentice for the Wrexham Maelor Hospital. This role offers hands-on experience in improving facilities and equipment, unlocking your potential, and learning while earning.

Entry Requirements

  • 5 GCSEs including Welsh, English and Maths at A*-C or equivalent.
  • Level 2 qualification in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Motivation and passion for engineering.
  • Have lived in the UK/EEA for the last three years.

Salary

Scalable pay under Annex 21 of NHS terms and Conditions:

  • Sept 2026 – Sept 2027: 60% of Band 4 (top of scale)
  • Sept 2027 – Sept 2028: 65%
  • Sept 2028 – Sept 2029: 70%
  • Sept 2029 – Sept 2030: 75%

Main Duties

  • Receive comprehensive induction for placements within the Health Board.
  • Receive support from a workplace mentor.
  • Attend a day a week of off-the-job training to develop learning in the first two years.
  • Work with a college mentor.
  • Attend workshops to discuss and share ideas.
  • Work towards vocational qualifications, advancing through levels.

Qualifications and Skills Achieved

  • Level 3 Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Application of Number Essential Skill Level 2.
  • Communication Essential Skill Level 2.
  • Digital Literacy Essential Skill Level 2.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications

  • Level 2 Diploma in Engineering or currently working towards it.

Essential Criteria

  • Willingness to work towards City and Guilds or NVQ Level 3 Electrical/Mechanical craft qualification or recognised apprenticeship within 2-4 years, or equivalent level of knowledge and/or experience.
  • Practical experience of completing tasks in a maintenance environment.
  • Work on own initiative.
