This fixed-term secondment role (8 months to 31/03/2027) involves embedding occupational therapy within Job Centres and GP practices to support individuals whose physical and mental health impacts their ability to gain or sustain employment. Applicants must be current Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board staff and obtain line manager approval before applying.

Post 1: Job Centre (Rhyl)

You will contribute to an innovative pilot embedding occupational therapy within the Job Centre, supporting individuals whose physical and/or mental health impacts their ability to gain or sustain employment. You will assess functional capability, identify barriers to work, deliver tailored interventions, provide specialist advice and training to staff, and shape and evaluate the integrated model of care.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake specialist occupational therapy assessments focused on functional ability for employment
  • Identify physical, cognitive and psychological barriers to work
  • Develop person-centred plans, including graded return-to-work and reasonable adjustments
  • Provide practical strategies to support condition management, routine and confidence
  • Deliver training and advice to Job Centre staff on functional capacity and health-related barriers
  • Support individuals to set realistic, meaningful employment goals
  • Liaise with partner agencies including DWP, local authority and health teams
  • Contribute to pilot evaluation through outcome measures and service development

Post 2: GP Practices

You will support a new primary care initiative working with individuals who have received Fit Notes for 12 months or more. The role focuses on helping people manage long-term health conditions, improve independence, and work towards meaningful activity, including return to employment. You will provide holistic, person-centred assessments, co‑produce goals, and deliver practical interventions within GP settings.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver occupational therapy assessments for individuals with long‑term conditions
  • Explore impact of health on daily life, including self‑care, routine and participation
  • Support condition management and improve independence
  • Develop personalised plans with achievable goals
  • Provide strategies for cognitive, emotional and physical challenges
  • Support graded return-to‑work planning where appropriate
  • Work with GP practices, primary care teams and community services
  • Signpost and refer to appropriate services
  • Provide agreed follow‑up interventions to support progress

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Degree or equivalent in occupational therapy
  • HCPC registration
  • Postgraduate training or equivalent CPD in a specialist area
  • Experience of contributing to student placements

Desirable Criteria

  • Attended short courses at postgraduate diploma level

Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Significant postgraduate experience with demonstrable experience in physical and mental health settings
  • Experience of contributing to service development and implementing service changes
  • Understanding of service evaluation and using outcome measures

Desirable Criteria

  • Broad band 5 rotational experience
  • Experience in community/primary care OT services

Aptitude and Abilities

  • Ability to articulate the role of occupational therapy and implement the OT process
  • Ability to manage time and prioritise clinical and role demands
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Communication skills and an ability to adapt these as situations dictate
