We are now accepting applications for the January 2027 BCUHB Clinical Attachment Programme (25/1/2027 – 19/02/2027)
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) is the largest health organisation in Wales, providing a full range of primary, community, mental health, acute and elective hospital services for a population of around 700,000 across North Wales. A Clinical Attachment at BCUHB is an unpaid placement designed to enable International Medical Graduates who are not yet GMC registered to gain experience of medical practice within NHS Wales. The programme provides an overview of UK clinical systems, standards and professional practice. Full details of the programme are in the attached document.
These Clinical Attachments provide a valuable opportunity for international medical graduates and doctors seeking NHS experience to gain insight into clinical practice within BCUHB, develop their understanding of UK healthcare systems, and enhance their professional development through supervised observational learning in a clinical environment. We welcome applications from motivated candidates who are committed to broadening their clinical knowledge and experience.
There are 16 Clinical Attachments available and a full list is available in the attached documents. Please indicate which Clinical Attachment you are applying for by stating the reference number and speciality (eg 5. Surgery - Breast) as the first line of the supporting information section on your application.

Application Process
All applications for the clinical attachment programme at BCUHB should come through the TRAC application. Applications should not be made directly to consultants working at BCUHB.
We reserve the right to close the applications early if we receive a high volume of applications.
After the advert has closed, all applications will be reviewed. Offers will be made based on application submissions. If you are not successful, you will be notified once all the clinical attachment places have been filled.
Cost
The cost of the clinical attachment at BCUHB is £250 this is payable upon offer of your clinical attachment and before your pre-attachment checks can begin. Details of how to make this payment will be included with the letter confirming assignment to a Clinical Attachment.
The Clinical Attachment may be withdrawn at any time if a participant is found to be in breach of policies or the terms of the placement.
Working for our organisation
The Programme
The programme consists of an initial induction period, followed by placement within a chosen clinical speciality. The placement period will include a range of educational opportunities, including but not limited to:
- Corporate Induction
- IT Training (where appropriate)
- Infection Prevention and Control
- Grand Rounds
- Teaching sessions across a range of specialities
During the programme, participants will be fully supported by a nominated Clinical Supervisor and will have access to pastoral and educational support.
Duties for a Clinical Attachment are generally limited to:
- Observing consultations
- Participating in patient administration (clerking)
- Taking patient histories
- Physical examinations (under direct supervision)
- Directly observing surgery
Clinical Attachment participants will have access to a structured and tailored teaching programme designed to support understanding of NHS practice and preparation for future employment.
A Clinical Attachment participant must not in any circumstances:
- Initiate, alter or stop the treatment of a patient
- Prescribe
- Order diagnostic investigations or imaging
- Obtain consent
All attendance in clinical areas must be supervised, and participants must comply with all Health Board policies and professional standards.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Medical qualification from outside the UK (IMG)
- Minimum 6–12 months post qualification clinical experience
- Evidence of English language proficiency (IELTS / OET or equivalent)
- Eligibility to remain in the UK for the duration of the placement
Desirable Criteria
- Evidence of preparation for or completion of PLAB examinations
- Previous exposure to NHS or equivalent healthcare systems
- Demonstrated interest in pursuing a medical career within NHS Wales
