We currently have an opportunity in our Portering Services Department for an enthusiastic, motivated individual to work within the Glan Clwyd Hospital and across community sites. The post holder will respond to requests for the movement of patients and goods in an appropriate and timely manner to provide a comprehensive and efficient service. This will involve the lifting, transferring, pushing, and pulling of substantial weight with the assistance of mechanical aids where a risk assessment has identified the need to use them; these may include sack and pallet trucks, driven and hand-held tugs / mechanical movers, and stairwell climbers. This is a physically demanding but rewarding role.
Main duties of the job:
- Portering Services provides essential support to all areas of the hospital.
- The porter will be expected to react to the various challenges within the working environment.
- The workload changes daily but may increase due to external influences such as the environment, weather, patient capacity, patient flow, etc.
- The porter will work as part of a team contributing to the smooth running of the service.
- They will provide an efficient and effective response to requests for patient movement, assistance in emergency situations, collection and delivery of samples and medicines, etc., all whilst ensuring that other scheduled tasks such as delivery of meal trolleys, linen, goods and mail are carried out in a timely manner.
- Many of the tasks are generally routine but the daily functioning of the service may be unpredictable; a flexible approach is essential and the post holder will be expected to use their own initiative.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

- Experience: Experience in a similar post
- Aptitude and abilities: Able to demonstrate good communication skills; communicate sensitively and act calmly in difficult circumstances
- Values: Able to demonstrate competence with people who may be upset or anxious
- Other: Able to lift, push and pull substantial weights for extended periods; able to cope effectively with distressing situations including death; able to travel within the geographical area; flexible approach to work and work all shifts including weekends, nights and bank holidays.
