An opportunity has arisen, for experienced laboratory support workers to progress to these new Associate Practitioner roles within the Blood Sciences service (Transfusion).

The successful candidates will support the continued service delivery and develop the Associate Practitioner role within Quality Management and Transfusion, providing support to the scientific and management team in meeting the requirements of UKAS, BSQR.

You will be able to demonstrate or be keen to develop knowledge and skills in quality management functions such as document management, audit and risk assessment and in Transfusion functions such as stock management, cold chain management, clinical and laboratory staff training and traceability.

Applicants currently employed as a Band 3 Medical Laboratory Assistant who participate in the out-of-hours rota and wish to continue in both roles will be required to continue their participation in the rota if successfully appointed to this position.

Main duties of the job

Working as part of the wider laboratory support worker team, these new roles will develop skills to provided higher level support for quality management and specialist skills to support the transfusion laboratory and practitioner services.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The post holder is responsible for assisting in the provision of the Blood Science Service across Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB).

Working with the Biomedical scientists and other members of the team to provide an accurate, rapid diagnosis of blood and other body fluid samples, which will improve the clinical treatment of patients, contributing to their welfare.

Carrying out, under minimal supervision by qualified staff the routine tasks in the laboratory not requiring all the specialist skills or training of a BMS.

Practising, within competence, the duties of a Higher grade MLA. Carrying out some of the core analytical work of the department using routine procedures, conforming to agreed standard operational procedures, policies and good laboratory practice.

To assist in training and development of Associate Practitioners (Associate Healthcare Scientists), Medical Laboratory assistants (Assistant Healthcare Scientists) and other appropriate trainees when required.

• Experience of working in a Transfusion laboratory or Blood Science Laboratory
• Experience of quality management systems and controlled documentation
• Understanding of blood component handling, storage and traceability requirements

Desirable criteria

• Training experience
• Microsoft Experience
• Knowledge of BSQR and ISO
