To undertake and manage civil engineering projects, ensuring delivery and achievement of outcomes in accordance with the requirements, standards and targets set out by the client and in accordance with Bethell procedures and policies. To work collaboratively with the client, design partners, internal staff, sub-contractors, operatives and other professionals to support this process. Responsible for all aspects of health and safety, quality and environmental assurance, contract administration, cost control, planning, communication and people management.

Principal accountabilities

  • SAFETY
    • Overall responsibility to implement all necessary safety measures to ensure a safe workplace in accordance with company procedures and policy.
    • Implement measures to ensure all operations are carried out with full regard for the safety and welfare of visitors, other members of staff and yourself.
    • Ensure daily H&S briefings, toolbox talks and site inductions are carried out as necessary for all workers on site and upload these records onto the Company CDE in a timely manner.
    • Ensuring requisite Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) are in place for all site operations.
    • Carry out site inspections in accordance with company procedures.
    • Ensure the workforce is trained and competent for tasks being undertaken and ensure training is identified and completed, working with the training department to ensure compliance to the training and skills matrix.
  • CUSTOMER
    • Be an ambassador for the Company, always presenting a professional attitude towards the client.
    • Keep the client informed of progress and any changes as they occur, ensuring compliance with the contract.
    • Maintain an organised, clean and tidy site layout that promotes a positive image of both the Company and our Clients.
    • Good understanding of the Client's Requirements for each project, record variations as they arise, assist the Quantity Surveyors with the task of completing fair and accurate valuations.
    • Maintain all correspondence with the client including Confirmation of Verbal Instructions (CVIs), Technical Queries (TQs) and prepare records for progress reports.
    • Responsibility for timely handover of information to the client such as O&M manuals, H&S File and as-built drawings.
  • PEOPLE
    • Show respect to all site workers and implement measures to maintain a high morale amongst the workforce.
    • Motivate the site workforce accordingly to ensure that the project meets its objectives.
    • Enforce the agreed site working hours and record accurate hours on weekly timesheets.
    • Performance management and appraisal of directly employed site operatives.
    • Engagement with subcontractors prior to commencing on site, coordination of their works, approving and acceptance of their works to the correct standards.
  • INTEGRITY
    • Regular on-site inspections to ensure Quality standards are being maintained.
    • Investigation, reporting and closing out all non-conformance issues.
    • Engage in the team role of harmonious departmental operation.
    • Submission of timely and accurate information to HQ including weekly plant records, material receipts and timesheet records.
    • Ensure that all negative issues such as near misses, environmental incidents and customer complaints are fully investigated and reported to Board level.
    • Ensuring accurate site records are kept and all site records are accurately filed at the end of a Project.
  • SUSTAINABLE
    • The forward planning of work is accurately managed to ensure that adequate resources are secured in time and used efficiently to achieve completion of activities in accordance with the Contract programme.
    • Progress is recorded and forward programming of works is co-managed weekly in liaison with the relevant Contracts Manager.
    • Organise daily deliveries of materials/plant with sufficient advance planning, ensuring all resources are used effectively and efficiently.
    • Monitor material usage on site to minimise wastage.
    • Consider recycling and re-use of materials whenever suitable opportunities arise.
    • Implement and monitor suitable measures to reduce the nuisance impact of our works on others.
    • Implement and monitor any measures to protect the environment affected by our works.
    • Review and ensure that suitable Environmental Management Plans are prepared for each project prior to the commencement of works.
  • EXCELLENCE
    • Implementing a robust Quality system on site to suit the work scope and specification.
    • Maintaining accurate Quality records and timely reporting of all non-conformance issues.
    • Maintain up to date drawings and documentation as required for the accurate building of the project including all drawing registers.
    • Ensure all work is completed to the drawings and specifications.
    • Initiating corrective action for any sub-standard work as it arises, target a zero-defect completion.
    • Pre-completion Quality inspections to target a zero-defect completion.

Person Specification

  • CSCS accreditation
  • SMSTS 5-day accreditation
  • Minimum 3-day first aid accreditation
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a site supervisory role
  • Experience in Civil engineering works.
  • Full clean driving licence
  • HNC/HND/Degree qualification in construction-related studies
  • Temporary Works Supervisor accreditation - Preferable
