Job Summary
Design delivery of waste water infrastructure technical solutions for the United Utilities AMP7 framework. Take responsibility for the technical solutions and specification compliance of projects delivered by Bethell. Lead multi-discipline external consultancy engineering teams to ensure solutions are delivered to schedule, budget and United Utilities Asset Standards.
The United Utilities waste water schemes are likely to adopt civil engineering techniques such as open-cut, shaft construction, timber headings, no-dig techniques (directional drilling/ pipe jacking), sewer re-lining and general sewer rehabilitation. The majority of schemes will involve temporary works, especially groundwork support.
Key Accountabilities:
- Ensure Bethell supply chain design work meets United Utilities standards, CDM duties and is delivered within the project budget and programme.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop customer links to understand their business objectives and their scheme solution requirements.
- Perform Principal Designer duties.
- Take ownership and accountability of the technical appropriateness and compliance for project solutions delivered by Bethell.
- Manage the development and delivery of appropriate, robust, reliable, operable and maintainable designs that meet United Utilities Asset Standards.
- Represent Bethell with multi-discipline team of engineers from United Utilities and partner companies in the production of project solutions to Bethell business requirements.
- Production and management of engineering budgets and schedules for review by the Pre Construction Manager and Estimating Director prior to submission to United Utilities.
- Implement change control process to track and manage the development of the engineering element of a project to ensure all budgetary, programme and scope changes are correctly authorised.
- Ensure that all engineering outputs provided are in accordance with Health and Safety Legislation, documented Business Processes, Quality Management Systems & best practice e.g. checked and verified: calculations, drawings, specifications, and compliance with United Utilities’ Asset Standards.
- Liaison with other technical, operational, maintenance and strategic stakeholders and 3rd party co-ordinators.
- Ensure the design intent and solution requirements are adhered to during both the Preliminary and detailed design phases.
- Assist in the development of the Design Management Process.
- Support the Pre Construction Manager in the design definition/quality submissions on United Utilities Invitations to Tender leading to Bethell tender submissions.
- Progress reporting of Bethell design outputs within their AMP7 programme.
- Internal escalation and notification of any design issues on current projects.

Skills Required:
- Ability to lead and motivate a team of highly qualified engineers.
- Proven engineering technical background (senior engineer level or above).
- Excellent communication skills.
- The post holder will be a Chartered Engineer of a recognised Institution, with a significant level of post-graduate experience in Engineering and proven track record in multi-functional Engineering management.
- Full clean driving licence.

Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum 10 years in the civil engineering industry.
- Site experience of wastewater networks and with time spent working within a Contractor’s Design environment.
- BSc in Civil Engineering.
- Qualification in Temporary Works evaluation.
- Familiar with United Utilities Standards, processes and procedures.
- Has preferably undertaken a similar role in a medium-sized civil engineering business.
