Job Summary

Take responsibility for setting‑out the works in accordance with contract drawings / specifications to ensure that all constructed works accurately reflect the dimensions as detailed. To check construction works as they progress to verify that work is being constructed in accordance with the drawings / specifications. To work with partners, sub‑contractors, directly employed operatives and other professionals to support this process and drive cost efficiency.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Safety Abide with all site safety rules, engage with the site management team to ensure that workplaces are safe. Ensure that all operations carried out within your area of responsibility are undertaken with full regard for the safety and welfare of visitors, other members of staff and yourself. Assist in undertaking daily H&S briefings, toolbox talks and site inductions as necessary if requested by management. Provide input into Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) as directed by your line manager. Ensure that all negative issues such as near misses, environmental incidents and customer complaints are fully investigated and reported to Board level. Carry out site safety inspections on an agreed basis and forward to HSQE Dept in a timely manner.
  • Customer Be an ambassador for the Company, always presenting a professional attitude towards the client. Maintain an organised, clean and tidy site layout that promotes a positive image of both the Company and our Clients. Have a good understanding of the Client's Requirements each project and construct the works on site to ensure they comply with these requirements. Keep records of all correspondence with the client including Confirmation of Verbal Instructions (CVIs), Technical Queries (TQs). Ensuring data is captured and saved in correct CDE.
  • People Show respect to all site workers and implement measures to maintain a high morale amongst the workforce. Management of site personnel as agreed with your line manager to ensure that efficient working is being undertaken, and the site workforce is motivated towards achieving the site objectives. Engagement with subcontractors, coordination of their works, approving and acceptance of their works to the correct dimensional standards. Work closely with the commercial team, record all work where there is a deviation from the contract drawings. Such records should include sketches and photographs and provide such information to the Quantity Surveyor in a timely manner. Assist in development and mentoring of apprentices and Graduates.
  • Integrity Regular on‑site inspections to ensure Quality standards are being maintained and records correctly documented. Timely reporting of non‑compliance issues to senior management and closing out non‑conformance in accordance with company procedures. Ensure setting‑out information is planned and executed in good time to prevent delays. Take responsibility for the safe handling of all surveying instruments and secure storage when not in use. Carry out regular site checks to ensure that instruments are calibrated and maintained as necessary. Take responsibility for the collection of all as‑built information and prepare as‑constructed drawings as required. Regularly re‑check key setting‑out points to ensure no disturbance of position. Produce accurate material take‑off quantities from contract drawings, collate this information with relevant specification data so that accurate material requisitions can be placed. Keep accurate setting‑out records, level books and field books until the completion of each project. Take responsibility for the manufacture and safe storage of concrete test cubes and ensure all relevant information is collected to provide full audit trail. Develop ITP plans and ensure hold points and correct documentation is produced and issued. Assist in compilation of as‑built drawings and Health and Safety files.
  • Sustainable Continually check ongoing works to ensure adherence to the setting‑out information to minimise material wastage. Consider recycling and re‑use of materials whenever suitable opportunities arise. Implement and monitor suitable measures to reduce the nuisance impact of our works on others. Implement and monitor any measures to protect the environment affected by our works. Review and ensure that suitable Environmental Management measures are implemented and maintained.
  • Excellence Set out all baselines, offsets and other necessary reference information needed for the workforce to accurately construct the works in accordance with the contract drawings. Continually check ongoing works to ensure that they are being executed within acceptable tolerances of the setting‑out information and the contract drawings. Check material deliveries are compliant with the specification and all relevant material data is maintained in accordance with the project Quality Plan. Maintain accurate records of construction works under your control which should include sketches, site records and photographs of the works as they progress. Implement the agreed Quality measures on site to suit the work scope and specification, maintain appropriate Quality Control documentation such as pre‑pour inspections, dip sheets and drainage data sheets. Maintain up to date drawings and documentation as required for the accurate building of the project including all drawing registers. Ensure all work is completed to the drawings and specifications. Initiating corrective action for any sub‑standard work as it arises, target a zero‑defect completion. Pre‑completion Quality inspections to target a zero‑defect completion.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Experience

  • CSCS accreditation
  • SMSTS 5‑day accreditation preferable
  • Minimum 3‑day first aid accreditation
  • Experience in setting out excavation/groundworks/concreting/drainage/highways
  • Full clean driving licence
  • ONC/HNC/HND/Degree qualification in construction‑related studies preferable
